LEXINGTON, Va. - Rodrigo Vianna scored his first goal of the season and Coastal Carolina posted its fifth shutout of the year en route to a 1-0 win over VMI Monday afternoon from Patchin Field.

Vianna scored in the 19th minute off an assist from sophomore midfielder Luis Faz. The Chants created the scoring opportunity after Faz sent a cross from approximately 30 yards out that found Rodrigo waiting near the penalty marker for a header past VMI keeper Brian Sowell near post.

Coastal Carolina (5-4-1, 1-1-0) controlled the tempo of the match and were in control of possession for the majority of the game. The Chanticleers held an 18-9 advantage in shots and a 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

"I thought that we had the better of the possession during the first half, but VMI came out strong in the second half and really battled to try and get a goal," Coastal head coach Shaun Docking said. "I was really pleased with the way the defense played today and helped lead us to the shutout."

Junior keeper Scott Angevine tallied his fourth shutout of the season after making three saves. Angevine has yet to allow a goal in all five of the Chanticleer wins.

"I was very happy with the way the guys came out and battled today against a quality VMI team," Docking added. "We played a tough Liberty team Saturday at a place that is very difficult to play. I was pleased with our fitness today after only having one day off following the match Saturday. It was essentially a back-to-back game, but we were able to cope with the everything and come up with a big win."

The win improved Coastal to 12-0 all-time against VMI. The Chanticleers have also outscored the Keydets 29-5 during those games.

Coastal returns to action Saturday at 7 p.m. when the Chanticleers welcome Presbyterian to the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field.
