ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team snapped its three-match win streak, falling 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-19) to Winthrop at the Winthrop Coliseum on Tuesday, Oct. 5. It was the first Tuesday loss of the season as the Chanticleers fall to 10-9 overall and 3-2 in the Big South. The Eagles improve to 7-10 and 4-1 in the conference.
Senior Chelsy Kimes led the Chants will 18 kills, hitting .447 on the night while Erika Lightsey added eight kills and 11 digs. Lauren Alejo finished the night with 24 assists and Lindsay Gill registered 12 digs. Meghan Laffin posted three blocks and one service ace in the match.
Both teams came out strong in the first set, forcing 12 ties and five lead changes. Coastal went out to an early 4-2 lead and both teams stayed close not allowing each other to go ahead more than two points. At 13-12, the Chanticleers went on an 8-3 run to put them ahead 21-15, but the Eagles answered back with a 6-0 run of their own to tie the set at 21-all. Winthrop kept the momentum, winning the first set 26-24.
Coastal found itself down 4-2 early in the second set, fighting back and forth for five points before eventually tying the set at 8-all. Following the tie, the Chants kept a one point lead for most of the remaining set until Winthrop tied the set back up at 18-all. The set saw two more ties until at 20-all, the Eagles pieced together a 5-0 run to win the set 25-20.
In the third set, the Chanticleers came out strong, going out to a 7-3 lead, but the Eagles answered back with a 6-0 run to take the final lead of the set at 9-7. Coastal found itself down by four at 13-9 and battled back to within two at 17-14, but it was as close as it would get, falling 25-19 in the set.
Coastal is back on the road, traveling to Lynchburg to take on Liberty for a 12 p.m. match on Saturday, Oct. 9.
