CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team had its seven-match winning streak halted Friday night, falling in four sets to James Madison, 3–1 (25–20, 22–25, 25–22, 25–22), in a Sun Belt Conference showdown inside the HTC Center.
The Chanticleers were the final team to drop a conference match, falling to 14–5 overall and 6–1 in league play. JMU improved to 13–6 overall and 6–1 in the Sun Belt.
JMU outhit Coastal .306 to .261 behind a balanced offensive effort led by Kennedy Louisell's match-high 17 kills. Ana Toumazatos added 12 kills and Anna Wilson chipped in 10. Setter Rebecca Watkins paced the Dukes with 25 assists and two service aces, while Grace Wenrich distributed 23 assists and Julia McNeley collected a match-best 23 digs.
For Coastal,
Jalyn Stout recorded a triple-double with 17 kills, 24 assists and 16 digs, becoming the 13th player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills.
Emily Fowler added 13 kills on a .375 hitting percentage, while
Anzley Rinard tallied 12 kills. Setter
Ava Wallis posted her 10th double-double of the season with 25 assists and 12 digs.
QUICK SET RECAP
Set 1: James Madison took control midway through the opening frame with a 5–0 run to go ahead 20–16, fueled by back-to-back service aces from Wilson. The Dukes hit .579 in the set and closed it out on a Melisa Ilter kill to take the early lead.
Set 2: Coastal evened the match behind a late surge, scoring seven of the final nine points. The Chanticleers posted four blocks in the frame to level the match, with key kills from Rinard and Stout down the stretch.
Set 3: After a back-and-forth start, JMU used a 4–0 spurt to pull ahead 16–11 and led the rest of the way. The Dukes hit .333 behind Louisell's seven kills, while
Emma Van Elslande's five kills kept the Chanticleers close before JMU clinched the set on a Coastal attack error.
Set 4: The teams traded points until JMU broke a 14–14 tie with a 6–2 run led by Louisell and Toumazatos. Coastal cut the deficit to 24–22 after back-to-back kills from Fowler and Rinard, but the Dukes closed the match on a Chanticleer attack error.
NOTES
• Coastal fell to 4–7 all-time against JMU and 2–1 against the Dukes at the HTC Center.
• Stout posted her ninth triple-double of the season and the 43rd of her career, and registered a season-high in assists (24).
• Rinard matched her season highs for kills (12) and recorded a season-best seven digs.
