Oct. 9, 2010

Box Score

CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team won its second straight league game following a 2-1 victory over Presbyterian Saturday evening at the Coastal Carolina soccer field.

The Chanticleers struck early and got on the board first when Justin Portillo scored his second goal of the season in the 14th minute. Kristoffer Sandtroen picked up an assist on the play after sending a cross from the left side of the field into the Blue Hose box. Portillo controlled the pass and, after his initial attempt was blocked, regained possession and beat Presbyterian keeper James Neal with a shot to the near post.

Coastal added a second goal just over three minutes later in the 17th minutes on a shot from Rodrigo Vianna. Sandtroen started the scoring opportunity near midfield and dribbled down the left side of the field before sending a through ball into the corner for Luis Faz. Faz quickly crossed the ball into the Presbyterian box where a waiting Vianna fired a one-touch shot past Neal and into the back of the net.

The Chanticleers finished the first half with a total of 13 shots, while the Coastal defense limited Presbyterian to just two shots.

Presbyterian (1-8-1, 0-4-0) cut the Chanticleer lead in half minutes into the second half on a goal from Davis Orders. Thomas Palma picked up the assist on the play after hitting Orders with a pass approximately 15 yards in front of the Coastal goal. Orders beat Chanticleer keeper Scott Angevine with a shot to the near post.

"I was very pleased with the way we played in the first half, and I thought we came out with great intensity and created a lot of good scoring chances," Coastal Carolina head coach Shaun Docking said. "We came out in the second half as almost a different team, but give credit to Presbyterian because I thought they played very well in the second half and competed a lot better. I thought our guys managed the game very well in the last 15 minutes and it was good to get another conference win."

Coastal Carolina (6-4-1, 2-1-0) is unbeaten in its last six meetings with Presbyterian and has outscored the Blue Hose 24-5 during that span.

Coastal Carolina returns to action Wednesday at 4 p.m. when the Chanticleers welcome UNC Asheville to the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field. Presbyterian returns to the field Tuesday to host Georgia Southern at 6 p.m.
