HIGH POINT, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the Big South Tournament following its 1-0 blanking of VMI Thursday afternoon from Vert Stadium.
The Chanticleers have reached the semifinals of the Big South Tournament in each of the last three seasons and will face third-seeded Gardner-Webb Friday at 4 p.m. with a berth in the finals on the line.
Coastal improved to 13-0 all-time against VMI and have outscored the Keydets 30-5 during the streak.
Freshman Robby Joe Daniels, who has appeared in just six games for the Chants, scored the only goal of the game in the 59th minute when he netted his second goal of the season.
Justin Portillo picked up his sixth assist of the season after hitting Daniels with a through ball that led to a shot by Daniels that beat VMI keeper Brian Sowell to the right side.
"I was very pleased about today's outcome and that we have advanced into the semifinals," Coastal Carolina head coach Shaun Docking said. "We played great defensively today and with a lot of maturity against a good VMI team. VMI played a very strong second half and we were lucky not to give up a goal to them, but in the end I am very proud of how hard our guys fought and battled."
Chanticleer keeper Scott Angevine picked up his 10th win and sixth shutout of the season after making five saves.
