Box Score

HIGH POINT, N.C. - The No. 2 seed Coastal Carolina men's soccer team advanced to the championship game of the Big South Tournament and will play for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament following its 1-0 shutout of third -seeded Gardner-Webb Friday afternoon at Vert Stadium.

The Chants will face No. 1 seed High Point Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Coastal has reached the title game of the Big South Tournament for the sixth time under head coach Shaun Docking and has earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament in five of those matches. The Chants will be looking for their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2005 on Sunday.

Coastal midfielder Pedro Ribeiro, who was recently named to the Big South All-Freshman Team, scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season when he converted a penalty kick in the 69th minute. Ribeiro's goal was his fifth game-winning goal of the season and his second against Gardner-Webb. The Belo Horizonte, Brazil, native lifted the Chants to a 2-1 road win over the Runnin' Bulldogs on Oct. 16.

"I am very pleased with the outcome of the match and am excited to be playing in the finals on Sunday," Docking said. "I am proud of the way our players fought and battled today against a good team. The win is a testament to our seniors and Sunday's finals will be an exciting match."

Coastal Carolina (11-7-2) held a 19-10 advantage in shots and posted an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. Ribeiro finished the contest with a team-high seven shots, while senior Ross Kelly put three of his four shots on goal.

Senior Joe Anderson nearly put the Chants ahead 2-0 in the 77th minute, but his shot hit the post and negated the scoring opportunity.

Coastal junior keeper Scott Angevine picked up his 11th win and seventh shutout of the season to improve to 11-7-2 this season. Angevine has shutout four Big South opponents this season and has allowed just one of those teams to score one more than goal in a single game.
