CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's basketball team plays its first road game of the season when the Chanticleers travel to Charleston, S.C., to take on the College of Charleston Tuesday night at 7 p.m. from Carolina First Arena.
Coastal Carolina (2-0) enters Tuesday's game coming off a perfect weekend that saw the Chanticleers post a pair of victories inside Kimbel Arena. The Chants opened the weekend with a convincing 112-52 win over Piedmont College to secure the 500th win in program history.
Eight Chanticleers scored in double figures led by the 22 points and career-high 11 rebounds from senior Chad Gray. Newcomer Desmond Holloway, Danny Nieman and Kierre Greenwood also added 13 points apiece.
The Chanticleers followed that victory with a 79-40 win over LaGrange College Saturday afternoon. Holloway scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Greenwood added 12 points and a game-high six assists, while junior Willie Kirkland finished with 11 points and four rebounds.
Coastal led 18-14 with 7:03 left in the opening half, but reeled off 26 straight points to enter halftime with a commanding 44-14 lead.
Holloway paces the Chants on offense with 15.5 points per game, while Gray owns a team-leading 7.5 rebounds per game. Gray (13.0 ppg), Greenwood (12.0 ppg), Kirkland (11.5 ppg) and Dexter Moore (10.5 ppg) also average in double figures for Coastal.
College of Charleston (1-1) plays its first home game of the season after splitting a pair of road games last week. The Cougars nearly upset Maryland in the opening round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, but a late Maryland run lifted the Terps to a 75-74 victory.
The Cougars picked up their first win of the season Saturday with a 93-84 victory at Holy Cross.
Senior Andrew Goudelock leads the College of Charleston with 22.5 points per game and is tied for the team lead with Antwaine Wiggins with 5.5 rebounds per game. Jeremy Simmons (16.0 ppg), Donavan Monroe (12.5 ppg) and Willis Hall (11.0 ppg) also average in double figures for the Cougars.
College of Charleston owns a 32-11 lead over Coastal Carolina in the all-time series that dates back to the 1974-75 season. The Chanticleers defeated the Courgars last season 70-59 behind the 21 points and 17 rebounds of former Coastal great Joseph Harris.
