Strong Second Half Pushes Charleston Past Coastal

CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston shot 64.3 percent in the second half and hit eight three-pointers to erase a 12-point haftime defecit en route to a 83-67 victory over Coastal Carolina Tuesday night from Carolina First Arena.

Coastal Carolina (2-1) led 40-28 at halftime behind the 14 points of junior Desmond Holloway, but College of Charleston opened the second half on an 8-0 run over the first 1:45 to trim the Coastal lead to four points on a three-point play from Andrew Goudelock.

Coastal held a seven-point lead at the 15:20 mark following a dunk from forward Chad Gray, but College of Charleston scored six straight points, which included a jumper and three-pointer from Goudelock, to pull within one point at 49-48.

Kierre Greenwood put the Chants ahead 53-50 with a layup midway through the second half, but Goudelock struck again with a deep three-pointer to even the score at 53-53.

Holloway answered for the Chants on the ensuing play with a tough jumper in the lane to put Coastal ahead by two. Goudelock, however, immediatley drained another trey on the other end to give the Cougars their first lead since the 18:25 mark of the first half.

College of Charleston (2-1) used 12-1 run over the next 4:28 to open up a 68-56 lead with just over seven minutes to play.

Coastal managed to cut the Cougar lead to nine points with 5:35 left to play, but the College of Charleston closed the game on a 15-8 run to pick up its second straight victory.

Holloway scored a career-high 24 points to go along with nine rebounds to lead a trio of Chanticleers in double figures. Sophomore Danny Nieman tallied 14 points and tied his career-high with four three-pointers. Brandon Crawford finished with 10 points, while Sam McLaurin pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds to tie his career-high.

Goudelock finished with a game-high 27 points and scored 20 points in the second half. He hit four three-pointers and tallied a game-high nine assists. Willis Hall added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Cougars.

Coastal shot 45.7 percent in the first half and took the lead four minutes into the game on back-to-back three-pointers from Nieman. The Chants lead by just four points with just over seven minutes to play in the half, but used a 12-1 run over the next four minutes to take a 38-23 lead.

Coastal Carolina returns to action Thursday at noon when the Chanticleers face No. 20 Georgetown in the opening round of the Charleston Classic from Carolina First Arena.
