Nov. 17, 2010

Coastal Carolina (12-7-2) vs. Duke (9-5-4)
Thursday | 11.18.10 | 7:00 p.m.
Durham, N.C. | Koskinen Stadium

CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team looks for its first NCAA Tournament win since 2003 when the Chanticleers travel to Durham, N.C., to take on Duke in the first round of the NCAA College Cup Thursday at 7 p.m. from Koskinen Stadium.

Coastal Carolina (12-7-2) earned an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament after winning the Big South Tournament last week in High Point, N.C. The second-seeded Chanticleers defeated No. 7 seed VMI 1-0, No. 3 seed Gardner-Webb 1-0 and top-seeded High Point 3-1 to secure the school's eighth trip to the College Cup.

Chanticleer senior Joe Anderson scored all three goals in the win over High Point to give Coastal its 10th Big South Tournament championship in program history. Senior defender Ross Kelly was named the tournament MVP after anchoring a Coastal defense that allowed just one goal over the course of the Big South Tournament.

Anderson, Alex Russell and Scott Angevine were also named to the Big South All-Tournament team.

Freshman Pedro Ribeiro enters the tournament as the Chants' leading scorer with 13 points on six goals and one assist. Ribeiro ranks eighth in the Big South in goals and first in the conference with five game-winning goals. He was named to the Big South All-Freshman team at the conclusion of the regular season.

Sophomore Luis Faz is second on the team with 12 points on three goals and six assists, while both Anderson (5g) and Justin Portillo (2g, 6a) are tied for third on the squad with 10 points. Freshman Kristoffer Sandtroen is first for Coastal and is tied for fourth in the Big South with seven assists.

Chanticleer junior Scott Angevine proved once again to be one of the top keepers in the Big South. Angevine turned in seven shutouts this season and ranks third in the league with a 1.04 goals against average. Angevine allowed just one Big South team to score more than one goal on this season and was selected to the All-Big South second team for his efforts.

"We are very excited about having the opportunity to play in the NCAA Tournament," Coastal Carolina head coach Shaun Docking said. "We are honored to be facing such a fine program in Duke."

Duke (9-5-4) lost 1-0 in the opening round of the ACC Tournament to Boston College, but won its final three regular season games. The Blue Devils posted a 7-1-2 record at home this season and enter the College Cup having won five straight at Koskinen Stadium. Duke has not lost at home since falling 1-0 to then No. 4 ranked North Carolina on Sept. 17.

Blue Devil sophomore Ryan Finley ranks third in the nation with 37 points on 17 goals and three assists, which also leaves him tied for second in the NCAA in goals. Cole Grossman is second for Duke with 24 points on eight goals and eight assists.

Coastal Carolina and Duke will be meeting for just the second time when the two schools matchup Thursday in Durham. The Blue Devils are 1-0 all-time against the Chanticleers after downing Coastal 3-0 in the NCAA Tournament in 2004. Tuesday's game will also be the third time this season Coastal has faced a team from the ACC. The Chants also battled NC State and Maryland earlier this year.

Coastal Carolina owns a 4-7 all-time record in its seven previous appearances in the NCAA Tournament. The Chanticleers have earned berths in the NCAA Tournament in 1992, 1995, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005.
