ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University softball team split at Winthrop in the first day of the three-game Big South Conference series, falling 10-2 in game one, but picking up the win in the nightcap, 3-1, at Terry Field on Saturday, May 1. The Chanticleers move to 24-26 overall and 5-9 in the Big South Conference while the Eagles go to 25-24 and 8-9 in the league.
Coastal struck first in the first game, scoring one run in the first frame. Ashley Pisone led off with a walk and stole second before Sarah Maples advanced her to third on a sacrifice bunt. Jazmin Daigle followed with a single to right field, scoring Pisone for an early 1-0 Chant lead.
Winthrop answered back with a run of its own in the bottom of the first as Taylor Wright singled, sending Megan Chapman across the plate to tie the game 1-1.
The Chanticleers took the lead for the second time in the third. Maples singled to center field with one out and advanced to second on the throw. Daigle recorded her second RBI of the game as she doubled to right center, bringing home Maples.
Again, Winthrop tied the game up at 2-2 in the bottom of the third frame. Chelsey Schoenfeldt led off the inning with a walk and Melanie Andrea came in to pinch run, eventually scoring off a double by Ashlee Revell.
The game would remain tied until the bottom of the sixth when the Eagles' hitting came alive by scoring eight runs and ending with a 10-2 victory.
Ashley Frederick picked up the loss, falling to 13-15 on the season after allowing seven runs on six hits. Megan Johnson pitched in relief, giving up three runs on four hits. Cari Wooldridge earned the win and improves to 14-12, holding Coastal to two runs on seven hits in the first game.
In the second game, Coastal found its bat's early, but could not string together runs. Pisone led off the first inning and Stacy Snellings led off the second with both recording hits, but were left stranded.
The Chanticleers finally pushed three runs across the plate in the fifth frame. Cacia Pierre started the inning off with a single to left field and Johnson came in to pinch run. Alyssa Tornatore advanced Johnson to second on a sacrifice and Ballard brought the run home off a single to center field. Pisone came up with a timely hit, tripling to the right field fence and scored Ballard. Maples followed with a single to the shortstop, sending Pisone home and taking a 3-0 lead.
Winthrop cut the lead to two in the bottom of the fifth, but was held hitless the rest of the game, falling 3-1 and splitting the doubleheader.
Katelin Edwards got the start for the Chanticleers, pitching her ninth complete game of the season and improves to 11-9 on the season. Edwards allowed just one run on two hits and tied her career strike out total of 11. Megan Evans took the loss for the Eagles after giving up six hits.
Coastal will finish up the three-games series against Winthrop tomorrow with the final game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Terry Field.
