CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina senior defender Ross Kelly headed in the game-winning goal with 58 seconds left in double overtime to lift the Chanticleers to a 1-0 win over Wofford to claim the Coastal Carolina/Adidas Invitational title Sunday afternoon from the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field.
Coastal freshman midfielder Justin Portillo picked up the assist on the play after his corner kick found the head of Ross in the middle of the Wofford box. Kelly leaped high into the air and delivered the golden goal past Terrier keeper Andrew Drennan.
"I was really pleased with the character of the group because they just kept plugging and plugging away," head coach Shaun Docking said. "I was really proud of the way they guys were able to keep a clean sheet and battle against a good Wofford team."
Both Kelly and Portillo were tabbed to the all-tournament team, while Portillo was named the offensive MVP.
Coastal (2-2-0) put together several scoring opportunities in the second half and nearly netted a goal in regulation with just over 23 minutes left to play. Portillo served a free kick into the Wofford box following a Terrier foul before Joe Anderson flicked a header on net, but Drennan made the save and kept the contest scoreless.
The Chanticleers squandered another scoring chance in the 78th minute when junior Jacob Downey just pushed the ball high and over the Wofford goal. Sophomore Sebastian Bahos sent a through ball into the corner of the field for fellow sophomore Rodrigo Vianna. Vianna then crossed the ball to the feet of Downey and his chip shot sailed over the crossbar.
Pedro Riberio, who scored two goals in Friday's game win over Howard, was just inches of picking up his third goal of the weekend with a shot with under a minute to play in regulation. Riberio received a pass from Kristoffer Sandtroen and settled the ball to his feet with a chest trap and spun around and fired a shot just to the right of the Wofford post.
"It's always better to win than lose, and I was really pleased with the way our guys responded after last week," Docking said. "We did a good job of creating more scoring opportunities this week against two good teams. It's a great feeling and I think we are beginning to gel a little more and we're doing a lot better defensively."
Junior keeper Scott Angevine picked up his second shutout of the weekend after finished with four saves en route to his selection to the all-tournament team. Defender Alex Russell also earned a spot on the team and was named the defensive MVP after logging every minute of the tournament.
Coastal returns to action Friday at 4 p.m. when the Chanticleers travel to Washington, D.C., to take on George Washington.
