WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team picked up its first signature win of the season Tuesday night when the Chants defeated No. 19 UNC Wilmington 1-0 from the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Chanticleers are now unbeaten in five of their last six games and have outscored their opponents 12-3 during that stretch.
Coastal Carolina (4-3-1) managed only two shots during the entire match, but the Chanticleers made the most of their opportunities and turned in another strong defensive effort en route to victory.
Freshman midfielder Pedro Ribeiro netted his third goal of the season in the 15th minute to score the game-winning goal. The Chanticleers were awarded with a corner kick, which was one of only two on the night, and sophomore Justin Portillo sent a service into the Seahawk box. Ross Kelly won the ball in the air and headed it down to the feet of Ribeiro for a strike past keeper Brock Duckworth.
"This was a great win against a very good team, and I am very proud of the way our guys fought and battled until the end," head coach Shaun Docking said. "We were able to get a goal early in the game and then we dug in very well as a group on the defensive end. Hopefully this will give us some momentum as we head into conference play this weekend."
Bahos also made his presence felt on the defensive end and helped preserve the shutout with a save with just over 18 minutes in the first half. Seahawk midfielder Christian Davidson fired a shot on goal from over 20 yards out and beat Coastal keeper Scott Angevine. Bahos, however, headed the ball off the goal line and out of harm's way.
Angevine finished with four saves and picked up his fourth shutout of the season. In fact, Angevine has allowed just two goals over the last five games.
Coastal returns to action Friday at 4 p.m. when the Chanticleers travel to Lynchburg, Va., to open conference play against Liberty.
