Sept. 6, 2010

Box Score

RICHMOND, Va. - The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to VCU Monday afternoon in the Richmond Marriot Classic from Sports Backers Stadium.

VCU (1-1-0) scored its first goal of the game late in the first half when CJ Gehin-Scott beat Coastal keeper Scott Angevine in the 38th minute. Nate Shiffman picked up the assist after sending a through ball to the feet of Gehin-Scott near the middle of the field. Gehin-Scott finished the play with a shot over the top of the outstretched hands of Angevine.

The Rams struck again early in the second half with a goal on a free kick from Peter Lee in the 49th minute. Lee set up on the left side of the field and scored from roughly 50 yards out with a shot just inside the right post.

"I thought today was a pretty evenly played game even though we made a couple of errors to give up the two goals," Coastal head coach Shaun Docking said. "We are still trying to figure out ways to create better scoring opportunities as we move forward."

VCU held an 11-9 edge in total shots, but Coastal owned a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal as six different Chanticleers had one shot on goal.

Gabriel Rodriguez earned the win after collecting six saves, while Angevine suffered the lost despite recording three saves.

Two Chanticleers were named to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of the game. Senior defender Alex Russell, who played every minute of the tournament, was selected to the team, and freshman midfielder Justin Portillo also earned all-tournament accolades.

"It was a good weekend for us because now we have a better idea of our starting group as we head into our home tournament," Docking said. "This is why we play these early games. It gets us ready for Big South play."

Coastal returns to action Friday night at 7:30 p.m. when the Chants host Howard in Coastal Carolina/Adidas Invitational from the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field in the home opener. Wofford will face VCU at 5 p.m. in the first game of the invitational.
