CLINTON, S.C.- Without its leading scorer, Sydnei Moss, the Coastal Carolina women's basketball team fell to the Presbyterian College Blue Hose by a 52-36 final in front of 307 fans at Presbyterian's Templeton Center.
After taking a four point lead into the locker room at the half, the Chanticleers struggled to find the basket in the second half as the team opened the period on an extended scoring drought.
Coastal started the game on a quick 11-4 run over the first five minutes of play. Presbyterian then countered with nine points of their own to cut the Chants margin to two at 15-13with 6:20 remaining in the half.
After a media timeout near the four minute mark, Coastal got two quick baskets courteous of Shanika Maddox and Kayla Cook to extend the visitors lead to six. Kira Carter then made one of her three first half field goals to re-extend the lead to five after a Blue Hose had knocked down a three to slim the margin on the scoreboard. Olivia Irick scored the Chants final basket in the first half as she connected from long range to push the lead up to 24-18 with just over a minute remaining before the intermission.
Presbyterian's Mariah Pietrowski scored the last basket of the first half to send the teams to the locker room with Coastal holding a 24-20 edge.
Through the first half Coastal shot 11-of-29 from the floor for 37.9 percent as PC went 9-of-24 for 37.5 percent.
The Blue Hose opened the second half on a 4-0 run to even the score at 24 apiece. Kristen Stevens then drained a three pointer to give Presbyterian its first lead of the game with 12:12 left in regulation. From that point on, PC would not relinquish the advantage on the scoreboard.
Presbyterian would drag out its lead to as many as 21 points over the final ten minutes of play on its way to securing the home victory.
Coastal's Carter and Irick were the top two scorers for the Chanticleers as both scored 10 points on a combined 8-of-22 from the floor.
The Chanticleers finished the game shooting 27.8 percent from the floor while PC shot 40.4 percent.
Presbyterian's Kristen Stevens sank four three pointers to lead all scorers in the contest with 12 points.
Coastal will return to the court on Monday, Jan. 10 to play Charleston Southern from Kimbel Arena. The game, which is the first of three in a row at home for the Chants, is set to tip off at 7 p.m.
