CONWAY - The 16th-ranked Coastal Carolina men's soccer team extended its winning streak to nine games after a 4-1 win over VMI on Friday afternoon at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field.
The Chanticleers (13-2, 6-0 BSC) bested the Keydets in every statistical category, including a 30-3 edge in shots and a 14-1 advantage in corner kicks. The victory improves Coastal to 14-0 all-time against VMI, while holding a 34-6 advantage on the scoreboard.
In the 29th minute of the first half, Cyprian Hedrick netted his third goal of the season as Ashton Bennett tallied his fourth assist on the play. Justin Portillo ignited the scoring opportunity with a well-placed corner kick to the foot of Bennett, who flicked the ball behind him to the charging Hedrick. Hedrick proceeded to rip the ball past the VMI keeper to give the Chanticleers an early 1-0 lead.
The Chants controlled the possession throughout the game as VMI failed to attempt a shot until the 54th minute.
Ricky Garbanzoset up the second goal of the game in the 63rd minute as he sent a corner kick to the box where Bennett headed in his 16th goal of the year for a 2-0 Coastal lead.
VMI (1-13-2, 1-5-1 BSC) scored its lone goal on a penalty kick by Ayao Sossou in the 83rd minute, cutting the Coastal lead to one.
Coastal answered in the 88th minute on a pass from Bennett to freshman Noah Anthony, who converted his first collegiate goal to give the Chants a 3-1 lead.
A failed VMI clearance attempt accounted for the final Chanticleer goal of the match as a Keydet defender inadvertently recorded an own goal.
"We have really good chemistry on our team and there is a really good focus on us to win games this years, I have really been pleased with the mentality of this group of players," said head coach Shaun Docking.
Coastal has now scored 43 goals on the year, 16 of which belong to Bennett, who ranks eighth in the Coastal Carolina single season record book.
Coastal will be idle for eight days before hitting the road for a pair of conference games beginning Saturday, Oct. 29 at Winthrop followed by a trip to Presbyterian College on Nov. 2 in Clinton, S.C.
