CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team turned in a 7-0 blanking of Mount Olive Monday afternoon from the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
Coastal Carolina (8-4) claimed an early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point after taking two of three matches. Seniors Matt Gordon and Peter Billingham gave the Chants an early edge by defeating Thiago Dualiby and Murilo Pelegrino 8-2 at the No. 2. position.
After Mount Olive won the match at the No. 1 position, Coastal earned the point following an 8-6 win by freshman Leo Christofides and sophomore Yusuke Kusuda over Yoanna Pham and Diogo Sender at No. 3.
Kusuda put the Chants ahead 2-0 following his 6-0, 6-1 victory over Akio Mariano at the No. 3 position. Gordon upped the Coastal lead to 3-0 when he defeated Pham 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 before Alex Funkhouser clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Dualiby at No. 4.
Junior Danny Heidecker posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Alex Queiros at the No. 1 position, while Christofides turned in a 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 win over Sender at No. 5. Billingham closed the match by defeating Pelegrino 6-4, 6-7, 10-8 at the No. 6 position.
Coastal Carolina returns to action Saturday at noon when the Chanticleers travel to Asheville, N.C., to take on UNC Asheville.
