CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team placed second in an eight-team field at the one-day, 36-hole Cavalier Classic, won and hosted by #22 University of Virginia, at the Birdwood Golf Club (par 72, 6,875 yards).
The Chants and Cavs were tied after 18 holes, each shooting a seven -over 295 in the opening round. While Coastal posted a two-under 286, Virginia turned in a nine-under 279 to claim the team tile with a two-round score of 574. The Chants' 581 was good for second and six shot better than third-place Maryland (587).
With the result, Coastal Carolina bolstered its resume in hopes of making an eighth-straight appearance at an NCAA Regional.
"We are ranked 64th right now and 68 teams get into the NCAA's," CCU Director of Golf Allen Terrell said. "As long as there are no upsets in a few other conference championships, I feel confident we will continue our season. We have a winning record for the season and have played one of the nation's toughest schedules."
Tripp McAllister led the Chants, tying for second with a two-round score of 140. His rounds of 70-70, four-under par, match his best career two-round score. Previously, he shot 6-68 at the par 70 Gator Invitational as a freshman. Freshman Roberto Ballesteros finished seventh for his first top 10 finish. After a 76 in the first round, he rounded to post a career-best, four-under 68 for a two-round score of 144. Ballesteros did shoot a 67 earlier this season, but it was at the par 70 Gator Invitational.
Junior Charlie Winegardner also produced a top 10 finish, carding a three-over 147. He shot 74 in round one and backed that with a one-over 73. Sebastian Soderberg posted back-to-back 75's for a score of 150 to tie for 16th. Drew Ernst rounded out the Chants', tying for 43rd with a score of 82-77=159.
The NCAA will announce the 2011 Regional participants on May 9.
