Chants Snap Losing Skid; Split Doubleheader with Winthrop

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team snapped its losing streak as it split a doubleheader with Big South foe Winthrop, 0-3, 5-1.

The win was the Chants first conference victory of the season and moves their record to 15-22 (1-3 Big South). Winthrop is now 12-23 (2-5 Big South).

The Chanticleer bats came alive in the second game as Coastal tallied 13 hits off three Winthrop pitchers. Leading the way was Brooke Donovan and Jazmin Daigle with three hits each.

Winthrop lit up the scoreboard first as the visitors were able to plate a run in the second inning.

Coastal would be quick to respond in the bottom of the second as Daigle led off the inning with her fourth homerun of the season to even the score.

Daigle then gave the Chants their first lead of the day in the home half of the third as she singled up the middle to plate Brooke Donavan. Sarah Maples then followed suit with her first of two hits in the game to bring home Jessie Winans.

Coastal would tack on two more insurance runs in the fourth to take the 5-1 lead. Olivia Piccirillo led off the inning with her second homer of the season. Daigle then picked up her third RBI of the game with a single through the left side to score Donavan.

Michelle Evans earned the win after throwing a complete game, scattering five hits while striking out seven.

The first game saw the Eagles defeat the Chants by a 3-0 final. Both team struggled to plate runs in the first five innings, but Winthrop was able to break through with a three-run sixth inning.

Winthrop's Veronica Berrie led off the sixth with a bunt single and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Megan Chapman then singled up the middle and advanced to second on the throw. Jenna Harbin then collected two RBIs as she reached on a fielder's choice. Kathyrn Ederlin then doubled to left field and was driven home by a Chelsey Schoenfeldt single to conclude the scoring in the contest.

Pineda, Evans and Daigle each scattered a hit in the game. Freshman Ashley Bagwell pitched the complete game, allowing seven hits while striking out six.

Winthrop Schoenfeldt pitched the entire game and allowed three while facing 23 batters.

The Chanticleers and Eagles will play the rubber match in the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
