CONWAY - The No. 23 ranked Charlotte 49ers erase a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat Costal Carolina 2-1 Monday night at CCU Soccer Field.
With the victory Charlotte moves to 1-0 on the season while Coastal drops to 0-1.
Coastal opened the scoring in the 25th minute on a free kick by Justin Portillo from 30 yards out to the left side of the box where Kjartan Sigurdsson headed the ball over the keepers head towards the right post.
The Chanticleers kept the advantage until the 59th minute when Evan James connected on a cross from Donnie Smith inside the box, knotting the score at one apiece.
James blasted his second goal of the night from the '18 on a cross from the left corner by Anthony Perez which proved to be the game winning score giving the 49ers the come from behind win.
The flow of the game was perpetually delayed by fouls on both sides of the ball. Charlotte was called for 16 fouls and three yellow cards while Coastal had three yellow cards and 17 fouls.
"They (Charlotte) wanted it more than us," said Coastal Carolina head coach Shaun Docking. "They have a talented group of players and we are still very young."
Chants keeper Scott Angevine recorded four saves while 49ers keeper Klay Davis had a pair of saves.
Charlotte totaled nine corner kicks while Coastal only attempted one corner kick.
The Chanticleers return to action Friday, September 2 against the Elon Phoenix at 5 p.m. in Richmond, Va. as part of the Richmond Marriott Classic. Coastal will play the Richmond Spiders on Sunday Sept. 4 at Noon.
