Sept. 11, 2011

Box Score

CONWAY - Sophomore Robby Joe Danielsscored the game winning goal in the 104th minute to give the Chanticleers a 2-1 double overtime win over No. 16 Virginia Commonwealth Sunday to win the Coastal Carolina Invitational.

The game winner developed from a corner kick from the right side of the goal taken by Justin Portillo. The ball sailed over the defense and was punched out by VCU keeper Josh Pantazelos. Ashton Bennettgathered the ball and passed it to Daniels behind the '18 where he ripped a shot into the upper 90 for his third goal on the year.

Defenders Cyprian Hedrick and Kjartan Sigurdsson along with Ricky Garbanzo and Luis Fazwere named to the All-Tournament team as Hedrick was named Defensive MVP and Garbanzo Offensive MVP.

VCU opened up the scoring in the ninth minute after a corner kick from the right side by Juan Monge Solano and was punched out by Coastal keeper Scott Angevinewhere Joseph Haboush flicked a pass to Garrett Harvey who headed the ball over Angevine's head for the opening score.

The first half was evenly matched as both keepers recorded a pair of saves with seven shots a piece on the offensive end. Each team was penalized with four fouls in the first period. Both Coastal and VCU had golden opportunities to score but both keepers made diving saves, giving the Rams a 1-0 halftime advantage.

Coastal came out in the second half with more poise and controlled the possession throughout the opening minutes. In the 52nd minute Bennett fed a perfectly placed thru ball to Garbanzo who connected on his second goal of the tournament.

The Chants were stellar on defense holding VCU and GWU to only one goal in almost 194 minutes this weekend. Coastal keeper Angevine recorded 11 saves in the tournament, including his first shutout of the year against George Washington on Friday.

Coastal returns to the pitch for the Coastal Carolina Tournament which features Appalachian State, Ohio State and Hartwick. Hartwick and Ohio State play at 5:00 pm Friday followed by Coastal and Appalachian State at 7:30.
