Coastal Carolina Women and Men Win 8th Annual CCU Invitational

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina University men's and women's cross country teams both took first place at the 8th Annual Coastal Carolina University Invitational.

Coastal runners claimed the top four spots overall in the women's 5K race. Junior Emily Marchini paced the Chants finishing first overall with a time of 18:22.38. Finishing directly behind Marchini was freshman Letitia Saayman with a time of 18:29. Juniors Stephanie Taylor and Shelby Nicosia finished third and fourth, respectively, with times of 18:47 and 18:56. Also finishing in the top seven for the Chants was Seanna Kautz (eighth overall), Jackie Brengel (19th overall) and LaChelsie Thomas(20th overall).

"I am extremely pleased with the way this team ran today," said head coach Allen Connie. "We had an outstanding top five, a great showing from our freshmen and Emily Marchini put together a very good race today."

In the team results CCU finished first with 18 points, UNC Wilmington finished second with 39 points, Concord took third with 82 points and Catawba finished fourth with 97 points.

Robby Peters of Concord finished first overall with a time of 15:31 in the men's 5K but Coastal Carolina took first in the team results. Evan Niciphor crossed first for the Chants, second overall, with a time of 15:31. Joseph Keitt finished third overall with a time of 15:57, followed directly by Kyle Kling who finished fourth overall with a time of 15:59. Junior Ryan Beckley finished fourth for the Chants, eighth overall. Also finishing in the top seven for Coastal was Cameron Wells (12th overall), Spencer Lange (17th overall) and Graham Larson(20th overall).

"I'm happy with this start to the season," said head coach Jeff Jacobs. "It was a very humid day and I think the weather had an impact on our runner's times but I'm proud of the way they performed under the circumstances."

Coastal finished with 29 points to take the team title, UNC Wilmington took second with 45 points, Concord finished third with 61 points and Catawba rounded out the group with 103 points.

Coastal cross country will take a week off before returning to action Saturday, September 15 in Rock Hill, S.C., for the Big South Preview/Winthrop Invitational. Times for the event have not yet been finalized. Check back to GoCCUSports.com in the upcoming days for more information.
