LYNCHBURG, Va. - Coastal Carolina scored a goal in each half as the 20th-ranked Chanticleers defeated Liberty 2-0 Saturday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va., to win its seventh straight match and improve to a perfect 5-0-0 in Big South Conference play.
Freshman defender Tommy Gudmundsson provided the goal in the first half, while senior Jordan Tyler added an insurance goal in the second, pushing Coastal's overall record to 10-3-0. In addition, the conference victory was Coastal's 33rd in its last 34 regular season matches. The loss dropped Liberty to 6-4-1 (1-3-0 Big South).
The first 20 minutes of the match featured open play as both sides pressed forward in search of the first goal of the afternoon. Coastal found said goal off the head of Gudmundsson at the 23:05 mark. Coastal earned a corner kick and Elis Bjornsson sent a perfect ball into the box for Gudmundsson to head into the goal. The score was Gudmundsson's fourth of the season and third in the past two matches.
Two minutes later the Chanticleer defense was put to task as the Flames found room to operate inside the 18-yard box. However, the Coastal defense was up to the challenge, turning away a pair of point-blank shots before clearing the ball.
Coastal controlled the possession battle through the later stages of the half and maintained its 1-0 lead at the intermission. The Chanticleers owned an 8-4 shot advantage through the first 45 minutes of play, while also owning a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Following a spell of defensive soccer to open the second stanza, Jordan Tyler broke the match open with his first goal of the season in the 67th minute. Ridge Robinson created the scoring opportunity by beating his defender to the left side of the box and sending a perfect cross in front of the net. Kevin Le Bras ran onto the ball and dropped it back to Tyler, who slotted his shot inside the near post. With the goal, Tyler became the 11th different Chanticleer to score this season.
In addition to the commanding offensive effort put forth by the Chanticleers, who finished the match with a 13-6 shot advantage, the Coastal defensive unit held its third straight opponent without a shot on goal. Moreover, the shutout was Coastal's fourth straight and fifth on the season. The Chanticleers have not conceded a goal in the last 390:04 of play.
Coastal returns to action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct.21, taking on Palmetto state rival Clemson at the Tigers' Riggs Field. The Chants and Tigers were originally scheduled to play on Oct. 17, but inclement weather forced the match to be rescheduled.
