Oct. 4, 2014

Final Stats

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Ricky Garbanzo's score in the fifth minute of play coupled with excellent defending down a man over the final 25 minutes of action lifted No. 25 Coastal Carolina to a 1-0 victory at Campbell on Saturday evening.

The win was Coastal's fourth straight and moves the Chanticleers to 7-3-0 (2-0-0 Big South) on the season. In addition, the victory was Coastal's 30th in its last 31 Big South games and sixth straight against Campbell. The Camels fell to 3-5-0 (0-1-0 Big South) with the defeat.

Just as they had in their previous three victories, the Chanticleers again found the first score of the match. This time it was Garbanzo with the scoring strike at the 4:54 mark of the first half. Uchenna Uzo played a long ball from deep on Coastal's half of the field that was flicked on by Bryce Follensbee. Garbanzo received the ball near the top of the box and took a touch forward before finishing to the right corner of the net. The goal was Garbanzo's third of the season and 35th of his career. Moreover, the game-winner was the 16th of his career, extending his own Big South record.

Coastal continued to keep possession through the majority of the opening period. Despite not adding an additional goal, although Martin Melchor had the misfortune of hitting the post in the 44th minute, Coastal closed the first half with a 14-1 lead in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corner opportunities.

Coastal continued to control the game through the opening 15 minutes of play in the second half, finding several good looks on goal. However, with 25:32 to play in regulation, Tommy Gudmundsson was shown a red card. The booking, Gudmundsson's second of the game, left the Chants a man down for the remainder of the match.

Despite being down a man, Coastal was able to compound spells of possession with stellar defending to repeatedly deny the Camels goal-scoring opportunities and keep the Camels scoreless.

Coastal Devin Cook-Perales recorded three saves to earn the victory and improve to 6-3-0 on the season. The shutout was the 14th of his career, moving him into sole possession of fourth on the CCU all-time list.

Coastal returns to home Tuesday for a match against Big South foe Presbyterian College. Kickoff from the CCU Soccer Stadium is slated for a 6 p.m. kickoff. Coastal leads the all-time series against the Blue Hose by an 11-1-1 count. The Chanticleers have won five straight against their conference brethren, including four straight by shutout.
