CONWAY - Propelled by first-half goals by
Sergio Camargo and
Ricky Garbanzo, second-seeded Coastal Carolina earned a 2-1 victory over seventh-seeded Longwood in the quarterfinal round of the 2014 Big South Tournament Tuesday evening at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
The win sends the Chanticleers (13-5-1) to the tournament's semifinal round where they will face the winner of No. 3 seed High Point on Friday at Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C. The loss ends Longwood's season with a 4-14-1 record.
The sides played scoreless for the opening 34 minutes, despite CCU owning the possession battle, before Camargo broke the deadlock at the 34:01 mark of action. Shawn McLaws, who was named the 2014 Big South Defensive Player of the Year, sparked the score by beating a pair of Longwood defenders toward the right side of the 18-yard box and centered a low-lying cross. Camargo ran on to the ball at the corner of the six-yard box and blasted a one-timer into the back of the net for his fifth score of the season.
Garbanzo, the 2014 Big South Attacking Player of the Year, made the score 2-0 in Coastal's favor in the 40th minute. Martin Melchor attempted a shot that was blocked by a Lancer defender inside the box. The ball sprung out to Garbanzo who placed his shot firmly into the back of the goal. The score was Garbanzo's team-leading eighth of the season and fourth in a pair of games against Longwood. Moreover, the goal was the 40th of Garbanzo's career, moving him into a tie with Hilmar Arnason (1987-90) for fifth on the CCU all-time list.
The Lancers scored on a Coastal miscue in the 66th minute, narrowing Coastal's lead to 2-1. Longwood caught Coastal's keeper out of net as a loose ball was near the top of the 18-yard box. LU's Dan Campos got to the ball first and touched it over to Nnamdi Ikeazor, who easily placed his shot in the back of the open net. The goal was Ikeazor's second of the season and marked the Lancers' first against Coastal in four matches since joining the Big South in 2012.
Coastal controlled the possession and limited Longwood's counter attacking opportunities throughout the remainder of the contest en route to securing the program's 14th straight conference tournament semifinal appearance.
The Chanticleers finished the match with a 16-3 shot and 9-2 corner kick advantage. Coastal was paced by four shots each by Camargo and Garbanzo. Finlay Wyatt led the Lancers with a pair of shots.
Coastal net minder Devin Cook-Perales made one save in the winning effort, while Longwood's Carlos Canas came up with a pair of stops in the loss.
