CONWAY - High Point scored in the first half and Coastal Carolina matched the goal in the second stanza, but neither team was able to break through for the decisive score as the sides played to a 1-1 draw Wednesday evening at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
The draw, Coastal's first since knotting Bowling Green 3-3 on Sept. 9, 2012, moved the Chanticleers to 11-5-1 (6-1-1 Big South) and High Point to 9-6-2 (6-1-1 Big South). By virtue of the league point standings, both teams secured a home match in the quarterfinal round of the upcoming Big South Tournament. Seeding for the tournament will be finalized following the conclusion of Saturday's slate of matches.
Coastal controlled the possession through the opening 20 minutes of play as High Point strategically played its pressure to set up the counter attack. The Panthers' strategy paid dividends in the 21st minute as Adam Storm split the Coastal defense and played a long ball ahead to Avery Ryan just outside the 18-yard box. Ryan took a single touch before chipping the ball past the keeper for the games' opening goal and his six of the season.
Coastal nearly leveled the match in the 31st minute as Martin Melchor connected on an Elis Bjornsson corner kick, but Melchor's header was met by an acrobatic save from High Point's Kody Palmer.
High Point then tested Coastal's Devin Cook-Perales on a set piece following a foul, but the junior stopper was there to make an impressive fingertip save off the line.
Coastal closed the half with a 10-5 shot advantage and 6-0 edge in corner kicks.
Coastal opened the second half on the offensive and immediately found space to operate in the Panther 18-yard box. Louis Dargent generated a quick shot that was blocked in the first minute of the half. Coastal then earned a corner that sprung Melchor free on the left side of the box; however, the freshman was taken down inside the box for a penalty kick. Melchor's penalty attempt was saved by High Point's Palmer, keeping the score at 1-0 in the Panthers' favor with 43:07 to play in regulation.
Coastal continued its offensive pressure and at the 51:11 mark of play, Shawn McLaws made the Panthers pay for another foul inside the 18-yard box. The senior calmly approached the penalty shot and hammered it into the back of the net, knotting the score at 1-1. The goal marked the first of the defender's 83-match Chanticleer career.
The ensuing 40 minutes of play were again dominated by the Chanticleers as High Point deployed defenders behind the ball and played for the counter attack. Coastal was able to create opportunities, but High Point's Palmer and backline was able to keep the ball from finding the back of the goal.
The two overtime session played much like regulation with Coastal holding the ball and moving forward toward goal. But, just as the Panthers did during the final 40 minutes of the second half, they kept Coastal off the scoreboard.
The Chanticleers closed the match with a 23-10 shot advantage and 13-1 margin in corner kicks. High Point's Palmer finished with six saves, while Coastal's Cook-Perales notched two.
Coastal returns to the friendly confines of the CCU Soccer Stadium for its final home match of the regular season Saturday against Longwood. Prior to the 2 p.m. kickoff the Chanticleers will recognize seniors Ricky Garbanzo, Ollivier Gueguen, Kevin Le Bras, Michael Millay, Shawn McLaws, Pierre Morin, Joel Perez, Mark Petrus, Ridge Robinson, Jordan Tyler and Uchenna Uzo for their accomplishments and contributions to the Coastal Carolina men's soccer program.
