Milwaukee, Wis. - Three unanswered goals by Marquette in the final 10 minutes proved to be the deciding factor as the Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team fell 10-7 to the Golden Eagles in a cold, back and forth game Wednesday afternoon. The 23 degree temperature at the start of the game marked the coldest weather Coastal has played in since the Chanticleers (2-5) and Golden Eagles (3-3) battled into double overtime last February on a 32 degree day.
Marquette's Julianna Shearer provided the game-winning goal for the Golden Eagles at 14:09 of the second half. Kenzie Brown added an insurance goal at 11:31 and Claire Costanza found the back of the net in the closing minutes to put Marquette up by three, the largest scoring margin of the day.
Coastal's Alicia Geiter added to her impressive freshman campaign with a team-high three goals on eight shots. Geiter is now tied for the season lead in goals at 12 alongside sophomore Sara Nolan, who netted one for the Chants in the losing effort. Mikayla Sweeney found the net twice while Keri White slotted her 11th goal of the season.
Sophomore Haley Bass, who scored the game-winner in last year's double overtime thriller, led Marquette with four goals on the day. Shearer and Brown each had two for the Golden Eagles while Costanza and Taylor Smith netted one apiece.
Marquette broke the scoreless tie in the first half, taking a two-goal lead in the first seven minutes. Geiter netted Coastal's first tally at 17:49 of the first and the teams traded goals for the remainder of the half.
The Chants trailed by one coming out of the locker room, but White evened the score not long into the second half with an unassisted goal. Marquette regained the lead a little over two minutes later when Baas found the net, and Brown gave the Golden Eagles a two goal lead with 20 minutes remaining in the half.
The Chants tied the match for the last time on consecutive free position goals from Sweeney and Geiter.
Marquette held a sizable 25-15 advantage in shots, as well as a 17-9 lead in ground balls. Coastal took the edge in draw controls, winning 10 compared to Marquette's eight, and scored on three of its four free position shots while Marquette failed on its one attempt.
Coastal netminder Trista Kuehn made seven saves in her second complete game of the season and now holds a 1-4 record. Marquette goalie Sarah Priem recorded just one save in the winning effort and evened her record at 3-3.
The Chanticleers play the second match of their three-game road stand on Friday when they travel to the slightly warmer temperatures of Cincinnati. The opening draw between the Chants and the Bearcats is set for 1 p.m.
