Final Stats

CHARLESTON - Coastal Carolina raced out to an early lead, but The Citadel immediately responded with six runs in the bottom of the first and took a 12-4 decision over the Chanticleers Tuesday afternoon at Riley Park.

Coastal Carolina returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Columbia to face #2 South Carolina at 7 pm. The game will be televised on Fox Sports South.

Coastal (10-14) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Leadoff batter Michael Paez singled, Zach Remillard walked and Kyle Jackson walked to load the bases. Tyler Chadwick lined a single through the right side of the infield to drive in Paez and Remillard.

The Citadel (11-14) then sent 10 men to the plate and scored six runs in the home half of the first inning. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with two singles and a walk before Tyler Griffin delivered a two-run single through the right side. Connor Walsh followed with an RBI and, after a sacrifice bunt, Jonathan Stokes hit a two-run double to left center field for a 6-2 lead.

The Bulldogs pushed their advantage to 7-2 in the second inning. Bo Thompson walked and scored after Walsh and Drew DeKerlegand had back-to-back singles. In the third, Ryan Kilgallen drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on a Thompson single to left field for an 8-2 lead.

The Chanticleers put two runs on the board in the fourth to make the score 8-4. Chadwick and Nick Oberg hit back-to-back singles. A wild pitch moved the two up 90 feet. Richard Carter plated Chadwick with an RBI ground out and Reid Moman followed with an RBI bunt single to score Oberg.

The Citadel got one of those two runs back in the fifth. Calvin Orth singled and scored on a wind-aided double by Mason Davis. In the sixth, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with two outs before Hughston Armstrong hit a two-run single to center to make the score 11-4. The Citadel took advantage of a CCU error in the eighth to extend its lead to 12-4. Pinch hitter Bailey Rush singled and, with two outs, scored on a three-base fielding error.

Ross White (1-0) was credited with the win, pitching 2.1 scoreless innings in relief. Cole Schaeffer (3-3) suffered the loss.
