Coastal's Lead Slips Away as Liberty Wins 4-3

April 9, 2014

Final Stats

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team jumped out to 3-1 lead, but the Liberty Flames rallied on the final three singles courts to walk away from Wednesday's match with a 4-3 win.

The loss drops the Chants to 10-9 overall. Their 2-4 Big South record may drop them to seventh in the conference pending the result of Wednesday's match between Radford and James Madison. The Flames, meanwhile, advance to 11-9, 4-3 and will overtake Gardner-Webb for fourth place in the Big South.

The Chants gained an early advantage over the Flames, picking up wins on all three doubles courts to take the match's opening point.

Philippe Tsangaridis and Leo Christofides quickly dispatched Liberty's Jorge Azuero and Alejandro Llamas on the first doubles court, 8-3.

Ted Nilsson and Jabor Al-Mutawa followed up with an 8-5 win at No. 3 against Shea Thomas and Guillem Secanell to clinch the doubles point.

The Chants' No. 2 pair of Garik Yedigarian and Renan Samed completed the sweep of the doubles round with a close 8-7 victory over Dillon Segur and Egon Samaai.

Segur brought the Flames even with the Chants as play moved to singles, taking a 6-4, 6-2 win over Hunter Whalen at No. 5.

Samed brought the lead back to the Chants after downing Vaughan at No. 4, 7-5, 6-1, and Nilsson put the Chants up 3-1 after taking a 6-1, 6-3 win on the second court over Samaai.

Trailing by two points, Liberty rallied on the three remaining singles courts.

Azuero finished off a 6-3, 6-4 match against Christofides at No. 3 before Thomas downed #101 Tsangaridis in straight sets at No. 1, 6-4, 6-4.

The match was decided on the sixth singles court where Llamas won a first-set tiebreaker before defeating Jabor Al-Mutawa 6-4 in the second set to clinch the match.

Coastal closes out its regular season this weekend with two matches. The Chanticleers travel to fourth place Gardner-Webb (11-10, 3-3) for a 1:30 p.m. match on Saturday before hosting ninth place Longwood (1-16, 0-7) at 1 p.m. on Sunday for senior day.
