CONWAY - The Furman Paladins escaped the CCU Soccer Stadium with a rare visiting-team victory, handing No. 8/13 Coastal Carolina a 1-0 loss on a soggy Friday evening in Conway.

Furman (4-1-0) found the eventual game-winning goal in the 76th minute off the foot of Lewis Hawke. Marco Ortiz headed down Hart Zwing's cross to the foot of Hawke near the top of the box. Hawke took a touch before sneaking his low-lying shot inside the far post. The goal was Hawke's fourth of the season and third in as many games.

Following the goal, Coastal (2-2-0) continued to press for the remainder of the match, including several great looks by Bryce Follensbee and Tommy Gudmundsson off corner kicks in the final six minutes. The Chants outshot the Paladins 26-7 on the night, including a 10-4 advantage in the second half.

With slightly more than 33 minute to play in the half, Coastal looked to be headed toward a breakaway goal after Jordan Tyler slipped in behind the Paladin defense. Tyler dribbled into the left side of the box and slid a cross over to Martin Melchor, but the freshman was unable to create enough separation from his defender to get a solid foot on the ball. Melchor's shot deflected away harmlessly, keeping the game scoreless.

Coastal and Furman went into the half scoreless, but it was the white-clad Chanticleers that owned the better of the half's possession. Along with winning the possession battle, the Chants also commanded a 16-3 advantage in total shots. Coastal had several good looks at the goal, but Furman's defense and the goal frame, which deflected away a pair of Coastal shot attempts, would hold firm and keep the Chants from finding a goal.

Uchenna Uzo appeared to give the Chanticleers a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute after his shot from the top of the box found the left side netting. However, the officials ruled that Uzo should have exited the field following an injury moments before, thus he would not have been on the field to score the goal if the rules was properly enforced at the time of the injury.

The loss was just Coastal's 21st the CCU Soccer Stadium since the facility opened in 2002. Furthermore, the setback was the first at the hands of a Southern Conference opponent at home since falling to Appalachian State on Sept. 16, 2011, during the CCU Invitational.

Coastal returns to the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m., hosting in-state rival South Carolina. The Chanticleers defeated the Gamecocks at home last season as Sergio Camargo netted his first career multi-goal game in the 3-1 victory.
