ROCK HILL - Coastal Carolina's Kyla van Graan was the individual champion and Aynslee van Graan placed third in the women's race at the Winthrop Adidas Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, while Joseph Keitt was runner-up in the men's race.
Kyla van Graan completed the 5K course in a personal-record time of 17:18.93 to notch her first individual title of the season. She finished more than 22 seconds ahead of runner-up Tristin Van Ord of Appalachian State. Sister Aynslee van Graan followed in third place with a time of 17:47.63, her fastest time in three collegiate races.
The Chanticleer women placed third out of seven Division I teams in the meet with 66 points. Appalachian State was first with 37 and Georgia State second with 40.
Jackie Brengel was Coastal's third finisher and also set a new personal best of 19:52.34 to place 26th overall. Emma Harrelson was just behind in 27th with a time of 19:54.70. Rachel Byrd finished 31st in 20:11.61.
Two-time Big South Conference Runner of the Week Letitia Saayman did not compete in the event.
In the men's 8K, Keitt clocked a time of 25:43.86 to take second place, behind only Appalachian State's Michael Ellis (25:36.49). Teammate Evan Niciphor also finished in the top 10, placing eighth with a time of 26:09.45. Keitt and Niciphor were the lone Coastal men to compete.
The Chanticleers will next compete on Saturday, Oct. 4 in the Greater Louisville Classic on the course that will also host this year's Southeast Regional meet.
