Asheville, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team pulled within two points with just over a minute left in the game, but ultimately fell 68-61 to UNC Asheville in Saturday's Big South action at Kimmel Arena.
The loss drops the Chanticleers to 10-9 overall, and 4-6 against Big South opponents. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, improve to 5-14, 4-6.
Freshman Jas Adams led all players with 18 points in the loss, shooting 7-10 from the field, including two 3-pointers, and making both of her free throw attempts. Jordan finished with 14 points on 6-18 from the floor, while leading the Chants with four assists. Ced Gibson's 13 points were third-best for the Chants, while Alexis Robinson led with nine rebounds.
Shonese Jones' 13 points led the Bulldogs, and made her the only UNCA player in double figures. Paige Love led all players with 10 rebounds, and finished 4-9 from the floor for eight points. For the game, 13 total Bulldogs recorded minutes, while 11 had at least two points.
As a team, UNCA shot 38.5 percent from the field, making just 25 of their 65 attempts. However, the Bulldogs out-rebounded the Chants 41-34. Of those rebounds, 20 came off the offensive boards, and UNCA finished with 14 second-chance points.
Coastal closed the game shooting 48.1 percent from the field, including 41.7 percent from beyond the arc, but made just six of its 12 free throw attempts.
Led by the eight points of Love and an 87.5 shooting percentage from the free throw line, the Bulldogs took a 31-26 lead in the first half.
The Chants trailed by just one point with 11:16 remaining in the half, but surrendered a 7-0 run to the Bulldogs over the next three minutes to fall behind 23-15. UNCA was able to maintain the gap over the next several minutes before pulling ahead by nine points with 3:14 to go, its largest lead of the game. Jordan responded for the Chants, giving Coastal its final five points before the break to cut the lead to just five.
Coastal came out shooting 63.6 percent from the floor in the second half, keeping the Chants within striking distance. UNCA, however, was able to keep its lead thanks in large part to nine second-chance points, and 12 points off of Coastal turnovers. Later in the half, as the Chants began to get into foul trouble, the Bulldogs were able to convert seven of their 14 free throw attempts.
Adams had a big second half for the Chants as the freshman tallied 11 points, capped by a 3-pointer with 3:10 remaining to cut the Bulldogs' lead to just two. Anna Vogt once again cut the lead to two at 1:52 after UNCA's Ja'Da Brayboy hit a jumper, but that was the closest the Chants came as the Bulldogs closed the game with five straight points.
The Chants continue their two-game road swing, and begin the second half of their Big South schedule, with a 7 p.m. game at High Point on Tuesday. The Panthers won the first meeting 79-64 back on Dec. 30 at The HTC Center.
