Women Place Second, Men Seventh at Big South XC Championship

Spartanburg, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina cross country teams competed in the Big South Championship on Saturday morning. The women placed second overall out of 11 teams, with Letitia Saayman capturing her second Big South title and earning the Big South XC Runner of the Year Honor. The men finished in seventh place out of 11 teams, earning 218 points.

Women's 5k | 2nd of 11 teams, 51 points

The Coastal Carolina women's cross country team competed in the Big South Championship meet on Saturday morning earning a second place finish overall with 51 points. The team was just four points shy of the first place finisher, High Point with 47 points.

Senior Letitia Saayman led the way for the Chanticleers in the women's 5k finishing with a time of 16:49, which broke the Big South Championship record by 17 seconds. The record was set in 2002 by a former Chanticleer, Anne Marie Moutsinga with a time of 17:06. Saayman's finished earned her the Big South Runner of the Year honor, capturing her second Big South title since 2013. Saayman finished in first place out of --- runners.

Kyla van Graan was the second Chanticleer to cross the finish line following her teammate closely behind coming in at 17:26 placing third. Sister Aynslee van Graan finished in fifth place with a time of 17:43. The Chanticleers had three runners in the top five and four in the top 20.

Rounding out the scoring for the Chants is Rachel Byrd finishing with a time of 18:29 who placed 12th and Alesia Mucklebust with a time of 19:15 finishing in 30th.

Regina Peattie finished the race with a time of 19:42 placing 43rd and the final Chant to cross the finish line was Kayla Tracy finishing 49th with a time of 20:19.

South African native Kyla van Graan, earned All-Academic team honors while maintain a 3.962 as a Business Management major.

Men's 8k | 7th of 11 teams, 218 Points

Coastal Carolina's men finished with points to earn 7th place at the Big South Championships, finishing in the same place as last year's race.

Freshman Josh Small led the Chanticleers once again finishing with a time of 26:35 placing 25th. Teammate and senior Zach Hensel was the second Chant to cross the finish line, placing 37th with a time of 27:21.

Rounding out the scoring for the Chanticleers is Elijah Shaw placing 45th with a time of 27:40, Jarrett Ashby crossing the line at 29:22 placing 55th and Charles Bascom bringing in the Chant pack at 56th with a time of 29:36.

Shaw earned All-Academic team honors while maintaining a 3.760 as a marine science major.
