CONWAY - Coastal Carolina used seven 3-pointers during the final seven minutes of the first half to expand a three-point lead to 24 on its way to an 81-57 victory over Campbell Thursday evening in Big South men's basketball action at The HTC Center.
The victory pushed Coastal to 20-9 overall and 11-5 in conference play. The 20-win season is the 12th in Chanticleer program history and the fourth under head coach Cliff Ellis in his eight seasons in Conway.
Elijah Wilson led four Chants in double-figures with his season-high 20 points. The sophomore made eight of his 14 attempts, including three 3-pointers. The senior duo of Warren Gillis and Josh Cameron scored 17 and 16 points, respectively. Shivaughn Wiggins also reached double-digits for the 16ht time this season.
Campbell (9-19, 3-12 Big South) was led by Andrew Ryan's 20 points. D.J. Mason contributed 13, while Curtis Phillips scored 12.
Coastal led Campbell 22-19 after the Fighting Camels' Mason knocked down a 3-pointer from the left wing with 8:41 to go on the first-half clock. The Chanticleers then received two points via Gillis free throws to ignite a 25-4 half-ending run. Coastal knocked down 7-of-8 3-pointers during the run, including five straight. Campbell received each of its four points at the free-throw line and missed each of its nine field goals. Cameron hit CCU's final two threes of the half and Wilson capped the period's scoring with a fast-break layup off a Cameron assist, lifting the Chants to a 47-23 lead.
The 24-point halftime lead tied Coastal's largest of the season (led Trinity Baptist 38-14), while the squad's 66.7 field goal percentage (16-of-24) also tied the season-high. Wilson finished the half with 17 points, while Cameron counted 15.
Campbell cut Coastal's lead to 13 at 52-39 with a 16-4 run to open the second half, but the Chants countered with a 14-7 streak to reestablish its 20-point lead with 8:47 to play. The Camels never threatened the rest of the way as the Chanticleers posted its 12 win of the season inside The HTC Center.
Coastal closed the game making 27-of-54 shots for a 54.0 shooting percentage, including 8-of-16 threes. The Chants also outrebounded Campbell 41-23 and outscored the Camels 24-6 in the paint.
Prior to the game seniors Gillis and Cameron were honored for their career accomplishments and contributions to Coastal Carolina basketball.
The Chanticleers hit the road for their two-game, regular-season ending games at Longwood and Presbyterian College. The Chants face the Lancer of Longwood on Mon., Feb. 17 before closing out its regular season slate at Presbyterian College on Thurs., Feb. 26.
