Lynchburg, Va. - The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team lost its second game of the season to Liberty on Saturday evening, falling 78-64 to the host Flames in Big South action at the Vines Center.
The Chanticleers' fifth straight loss drops them to 10-13 on the season, and 4-10 in conference play. Liberty, who remains atop the Big South standings, improves to 18-6, 14-1.
A total of 49 personal fouls were called between the two teams, and five in 28 minutes for AJ Jordan forced the senior guard from the game after leading all players with 21 points while shooting 47.0 percent (8-17) from the field and 5-6 from the line. On the other side, Liberty earned 26 points from the charity stripe on 31 attempts.
The Chants played well as a team, shooting 39.6 percent from the field, including 38.5 percent from beyond the arc, and 73.9 percent from the line. Juniors Anna Vogt and Stephanie Isaacs each contributed 13 points, while Vogt, Jas Adams and Alira Mihocic shared the team's rebounding lead with five apiece. Adams additionally added six points and a game-high four assists.
Liberty shot 44.2 percent from the field, and out-rebounded the Chants 37-30. Each side turned the ball over 18 times, and cashed in 23 points off of turnovers.
Ashley Rininger paced the Flames with 16 points and seven rebounds, followed by the 14 points of Mickayla Sanders. Sanders was also clutch from the line for Liberty, knocking down five of her six attempts.
The teams matched evenly in the early going, resulting in an 8-8 tie with just over five minutes off the clock. Liberty's offense then settled in, knocking down four quick shots to begin building a lead. The Flames continued to produce at the offensive end, and their defense held Coastal to just one basket over the next seven minutes. The resulting 23-2 run led to a 33-10 Liberty lead with 7:32 left in the first.
Jordan then went off for 12 points to lead the Chants on an 18-8 run for the remainder of the half, cutting Liberty's lead to 41-31 as the teams headed to the locker room.
Coastal hit its first two shots of the second half to cut the deficit to eight points, but came no closer for the remainder of the contest. Isaacs led the Chants with 10 points in the second, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the period and making all but one of her five free throw attempts before fouling out.
The Chants forced nine turnovers and shot evenly with the Flames in the second, but were never able to even the score as Liberty racked up 16 points from the free throw line on 18 attempts.
The Chants continue their two game road swing on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. game at Presbyterian. The Chants and Blue Hose battled to double-overtime in their previous meeting on Jan. 10. Jordan scored 36 points in the contest, but it was not enough as PC took the win, 84-78.
