ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Coastal Carolina scored in each of the first five innings, tacked on four runs in the seventh inning and cruised to a 13-3 victory at UNC Asheville Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Field.
The Chanticleers (16-6, 2-0 Big South) and Bulldogs (10-12, 1-4) will conclude the series Sunday with first pitch set for 1 pm.
David Parrett, one of four Chanticleers to hit a home run, was 5-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored. G.K. Young, who also hit a home run, was 3-for-6 with three RBI and hit two other balls to the warning track. Casey Schroeder, who hit his seventh home run of the season, was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Josh Crump only had one hit, a pinch-hit, three-run home run for his first collegiate dinger.
Amidst the Chanticleer offense, three CCU pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts on the day. Senior Austin Kerr tied a season high with seven strikeouts as he improved to 4-0 on the season. He scattered five hits and allowed two runs, one earned, with one walk. Mike Morrison worked three innings in relief and tied a season high with five strikeouts. Chad Adkins also tied a career high with three strikeouts, fanning all three batters he faced in the ninth.
For the second consecutive day, Coastal jumped out to an early lead by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Anthony Marks drew a leadoff walk and Michael Paez followed with a free pass as well. Connor Owings reached on a fielder's choice, putting Chanticleers on first and third. Asheville starting pitcher Lucas Clarke tried to pick Owings off at first, but an errant throw allowed Marks to score and Owings to reach third. Young brought home Owings with an RBI single to center field.
The Bulldogs took advantage of a Chanticleer error to answer with a run in the home half of the first. Lucas Owens reached on an error, took second on a balk and scored on an RBI single to right field by Kyle Towles.
The Chants quickly got that run back. Schroeder hit a leadoff single and, on a hit-and-run, scored on an RBI double to right center field by Parrett.
Asheville once again answered as Hunter Bryant hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the second to make it a 3-2 CCU lead. Bryant later hit a leadoff home run to start the home half of a seventh which provided the 13-3 final.
Coastal was able to extend its advantage to 5-2 in the top of the third. Owings drew a walk and Young drove a two-run home run over the center field wall for his fifth home run of the season. The Chants kept the pedal down in the fourth as Parrett hit the first pitch of the inning over the left field wall for his sixth blast of the season. Coastal then loaded the bases when Tyler Chadwick singled, Al Milina walked and Marks reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Chadwick scored when Paez hit into a double play.
The Chants pushed their advantage to 9-2 with two runs in the top of the fifth. Schroeder walked, took second on a single by Parrett and scored on an RBI single by Chadwick. Molina followed with a seeing-eye single through the left side of the infield to bring home Parrett.
After not scoring in the sixth inning, Coastal put a four-spot on the board in the seventh. Schroeder started the inning with a solo home run to right field. After a Parrett single and walk to Chadwick, pinch hitter Crump drilled an opposite-field, three-run home run for a 13-2 CCU lead.
Clarke (2-3) suffered the loss, allowing four hits and five runs (four earned) in three innings.
