CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team notched its third straight Big South Conference victory Friday night, homering three more times in a 9-1 five-inning win over Winthrop.
Kelsey Dominik and Sara Rasley each hit two-run homers and Amanda Daneker returned to the lineup with a solo shot as the Chanticleers hit multiple home runs for the fourth straight game and the sixth time in seven contests, while improving to 16-15 and 4-2 in Big South play. Winthrop fell to 12-17 and 1-3 in the conference.
Daneker, Dominik, Rasley and Hayden each had two hits and two RBIs as Coastal totaled nine hits against two Winthrop pitchers. Kiana Quolas (9-9) allowed just the one run on two hits, with a season-high eight strikeouts in the five-inning complete game.
The Chants jumped out to a 4-0 lead on three hits in the bottom of the first. Bri Chiusano drew a leadoff walk, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice by Quolas. Hayden followed with an RBI single to left-center and Daneker, back in the lineup after missing the last four games with an injury, hit an RBI double to deep center. Dominik then hit her eighth homer of the season over the left-field fence to make it 4-0.
Winthrop got on the board in the top of third with both of its hits and a walk, with Paige Haley contributing an RBI single. However, Daneker quickly got the run back for Coastal, homering to lead off the bottom of the inning, her fifth of the year.
Coastal then scored four more times in the bottom of the fifth to post its 11th run-rule win of the year. After Dominik reached on an error, Rasley hit a bullet over the fence in center for her fifth longball of the season and third in the last six games for a 7-1 advantage. Taylor Harris then drew a walk, stole second and came around to score on a fielding error on a grounder by Quolas. Hayden then capped the game with a walk-off RBI double, finding the gap with a liner to right-center.
Quolas, meanwhile, struck out at least one batter in each inning and a pair in the three of the five frames, notching a season-high strikeout total for the second straight start.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, with the first game starting at 1:15 p.m. The University will hold the dedication ceremony for both CCU Softball Stadium and Springs Brooks Stadium beginning at 12:30 p.m.
