BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Coastal Carolina softball team fell to No. 11/12 Florida State 8-0 in a five-inning finale of the Florida Atlantic Tournament on Sunday.
Florida State (18-5) scored a run in the first, two in the third, four in the fourth and one more in the fifth en route sweeping all five of its games in the tournament. The Chanticleers are now 12-12 on the season.
The defending ACC champion Seminoles used two singles around a pair of walks to get on the board in the first, but Kelsey Dominik was able to limit the damage, getting a groundball for a forceout at home and a flyout to centerfielder Taylor Harris to strand the bases loaded.
Dominik worked a 1-2-3 inning in the second, with help from a diving catch by Amanda Daneker of a foul popup, but a fielding error by Coastal to start the third helped Florida State add to the lead. After Maddie O'Brien was walked, cleanup hitter Alex Powers hit an RBI single to center that moved O'Brien to third. The All-American then scored ahead of the throw from shortstop Sara Rasley after a groundball to make it 3-0. Kory Hayden dove to her left to snag a liner for the first out, but another single loaded the bases. However, Mackenzie Conrad entered in relief and was able to get out of the inning with a strikeout and a groundout back to her.
As they did on Friday against the Seminoles, walks cost the Chants again in the fourth inning as five free passes along with a bunt single and an RBI single helped build the lead. FSU then made it 8-0 in the top of the fifth on a bloop single, hit batter and run-scoring single to left, all with two outs.
Dominik (6-4) suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs on four hits. Coastal was held without a hit by Florida State pitcher Jessica Burroughs (7-2), who struck out seven and walked one. Kiana Quolas reached on an error in the first inning and Sara Rasley did the same in the second on a ball that took a bad hop on the third baseman. Hayden drew a walk leading off the fourth.
The Chanticleers take on another ACC team and continue their road swing with a game at North Carolina Thursday, March 12 at 4 p.m. It is the final non-conference contest before they start Big South play. Coastal defeated the Tar Heels 3-0 in Conway last season, with Kiana Quolas tossing a no-hitter.
