CONWAY - Despite a career-high five stolen bases by Bri Chiusano, the Coastal Carolina softball team fell to Presbyterian by a 4-2 decision Sunday afternoon in its regular-season finale.
Chiusano went 2 for 2 at the plate and added a run scored, while surpassing her previous career-best of three steals on three prior occasions. She also took over second place alone in Big South history with 115 stolen bases.
Senior Kory Hayden went 1 for 3 to reach base for the 32nd straight game. She also walked once to break the program's all-time record with 115, passing Jennifer Bolebruch's total of 114 from 1990-93. Fellow senior Sara Rasley improved on her career-best home run total for the season, hitting her 10th.
The Chanticleers finished the regular-season at 31-22 overall and 16-7 in the Big South. They had already clinched no worse than second place and the No. 2 seed for the Big South Tournament. The conference setback at home was Coastal's first since April of 2013, snapping a streak of 26 victories in a row.
Presbyterian avoided the sweep and improved to 22-21 and 10-9 in the conference. Erin Ruff went 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs to lead the Blue Hose.
PC took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, using three hits, including an RBI single by Ruff and RBI double by Kersten Legacki.
The Chants got one back in the bottom of the inning as Chiusano hit an infield single, stole second and third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Amanda Daneker.
The Blue Hose then got solo home runs by Erin Taylor in the second and Ruff in the fifth to make it 4-1 before Rasley homered leading off the sixth. Chiusano walked to start the seventh and put the tying run at the plate, but the Chants were unable to put together another rally, after coming from eight down to win on Saturday.
PC starter Sydney Seigler pitched four innings to notch the win, with Kensley Loudermelk working the final three frames. Kelsey Dominik went all six innings for Coastal and suffered the loss.
Prior to the game, CCU honored its six seniors. Four-year members Hayden, Rasley and Kiana Quolas have led the Chanticleers to 153 wins and finished with a 68-24 record in conference regular-season play, along with two titles and at least one tournament championship. Maicie Hahn, Taylor Harris and Kasey Oliver also played their final home games.
Coastal will now have 10 days off before the Big South Tournament begins on Thursday, May 7 in Buies Creek, N.C. Pairings for the tournament will be announced next Sunday.
