WILMINGTON, N.C. - G.K. Young and Zach Remillard each had two RBI while CCU pitchers Tyler Poole and Brock Hunter held the Seahawks to 0-for-13 batting with runners on base through the seventh inning as #23 Coastal Carolina took a 5-2 decision at UNC Wilmington Tuesday night at Brooks Field.
Coastal Carolina improves to 31-13, including a 12-2 road record, while UNC Wilmington, which entered with an RPI of 35, falls to 29-12. The Chanticleers, which are 5-1 versus Atlantic Coast Conference teams, will complete its current eight-game road swing with a three-game weekend series at AAC member and seventh-ranked Florida State, which is sixth in the RPI.
Coastal Carolina got on the scoreboard first Tuesday evening with a run in the top of the third. With two outs, Michael Paez reached on an error and Connor Owings walked. Young followed with an RBI single to bring home Paez.
The Seahawks threatened in the home half of the third, putting a runner on third with one out, before CCU threw out a runner attempting to steal and, later with runners on second and third, Poole recorded a strikeout to end the inning.
Casey Schroeder made the Seahawks pay for standing the runners as he started the fourth with a solo blast to right center field for his 11th home run of the season.
UNCW had another opportunity in the bottom of the fifth. Hunter loaded the bases thanks to two walks and an error, but mixed in three strikeouts to keep the Seahawks off the scoreboard.
Coastal pushed its advantage to 5-0 in the seventh. Paez chopped a single over the third baseman's head and advanced to third on a hit-and-run single from Owings. Young followed with a deep fly ball to right center, which allowed Paez to easily score from third. Then, with a 3-0 count, Remillard had the green light and drilled a two-run home run down the left field line for his sixth blast of the season.
From the second inning to the seventh, UNCW put the leadoff runner on base each of those six innings. However, Poole and Hunter were able to recover by holding the Seahawks to 0-for-13 batting with runners on base through the seventh inning.
However, in the bottom of the eighth and a runner on first, UNCW got a single from Gavin Stupienski to put runners on first and third. Corey Dick followed with an RBI single, plating Casey Golden and moving Stupienski to third. Bobby Holmes then struck out a pair of runners to limit the damage.
The Seahawks took advantage of two errors to add a run in the ninth and provide the 5-2 final. Zach Canada reached on an error to start the bottom of the ninth, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a single from Zach Shields.
Poole started for CCU and pitched 4.0 scoreless innings. He scattered three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. He allowed two hits and one unearned run while striking out five of the eight batters he faced.
