April 7, 2015 CONWAY -Â With the spring sports season past its halfway point, many of the Coastal Carolina athletic programs are on a mission to win more Big South Conference Championships and seem poised for a strong finish in both regular season and postseason play. Â
As a whole, Coastal Carolina and its 18 NCAA sanctioned men's and women's programs have won 39 conference titles since January 1, 2010 and 162 in school history. In addition, the Chanticleers look to improve upon their 113 NCAA tournament appearances.
Here's a breakdown of where each Chanticleer athletic program stands to this point in the spring:
Baseball
· The Chanticleers are off to a 23-8 start, currently second in the Big South standings with a 7-2 conference record.
· Broke into the national polls for the first time in two years as they registered at No. 23 in the Baseball America poll and No. 30 in the Collegiate Baseball poll released on March 30. This week, Coastal is ranked in five of the six nationally recognized polls.
· Thanks to the brand new Springs Brooks Stadium and the team's 23 wins to date, the Chanticleers currently rank 30th among NCAA Division I programs in attendance as a total of 37,454 fans have entered the new ballpark's gates this season.
· Through 31 games this season, Coastal is just one win away from matching its 57-game win total from a season ago.
· Have currently won 14 of their last 16 games, including wins over then No. 11 North Carolina, Clemson and then No. 7 South Carolina. Additionally, Coastal Carolina is 5-0 against ACC-foes this season with separate wins against Georgia Tech, NC State and at Wake Forest.
· Currently appear in number of NCAA rankings as they are third in home runs per game (1.26), fourth in total home runs (39), ninth in sacrifice bunts (36), ninth in scoring (7.8 runs/game), 12th in runs scored (241) and 13th in sacrifice flies (19).
· The team is in search of its 16th regular-season conference title and 14th Big South Tournament title.
Men's Golf
· The 2014-15 Chanticleers are 57-85-2, including a second-place finish in the 18-hole Blue Devil Spring Shootout on March 22.
· They also finished tied for ninth in a strong field at the Hootie @ Bulls Bay Intercollegiate with a 54-hole total of a 3-under 861.
· Senior Andrew Dorn was named the Big South Golfer of the Week after a co-medalist performance at the Hootie @ Bulls Intercollegiate. He shot a career-low 11-under par 205 (67-69-69), good for the sixth-best 54-hole score in program history.
· Senior Ben Wheeler, along with Dorn, have combined for six top-10 finishes this season and currently rank fifth (73.63) and ninth (73.97) on CCU's career scoring average list, respectively.
· Coastal wraps up its schedule with the Big South Championships at The patriot Golf Club in Ninety Six, S.C. from April 19-21. The Chanticleers will be seeking its 15th conference title and first under second-year head coach Kevin McPherson.
Women's Golf
· The 2014-15 Chanticleers have captured three event titles this season, tying the program record for most tournament wins in a season. Individually, Lena Schaeffner has claimed medalist honors at both the Palmetto Intercollegiate and the 3M Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate, while Marissa Hinchman won the JU Classic.
· The team's 293.88 scoring average ranks best in the Big South (six stroked better than the CCU season record), while Schaeffner's 72.48 scoring average is on pace to set the program's single-season record by a full stroke.
· Additional top-10 scoring averages in the Big South include Malene Kroboll Hansen (third, 73.59), Emee Herbert (eighth, 75.50) and Bailey Cocca (ninth, 75.58).
· The Chanticleers enter next week's Big South Championships seeking its seventh overall league title and fourth under head coach Katie Quinney. The event is to be hosted at the DeBordieu Club in Georgetown from April 13-15.
Lacrosse
· Coastal Carolina is in its third season as a Division I women's lacrosse program and is off to a 6-4 start in 2015, already surpassing its win totals from both 2013 and 2014 (five).
· Prior to Monday's loss at Liberty, the Chanticleers were riding a program-best, five-game winning streak in which they outscored opponents 72-30.
· Senior attack Jen Cosgrove leads the team with 19 goals this season and needs 10 goals in the remaining five regular season games, plus the Big South Championship, to set the CCU single-season record for goals scored. Additionally, junior attack Keri White, who is tied for the team lead with seven assists and second on the team with 16 goals, has scored multiple goals in six of the last seven games.
· The Chanticleers currently second in the Big South in scoring defense (9.00) and third in the league in scoring offense (11.80).
· Three home games remain with High Point coming to town on Friday, April 10, followed by Gardner-Webb on Friday, April 17 and Presbyterian on Sunday, April 19.
Softball
· Coastal Carolina currently sits atop the Big South standings with a 21-17 overall record and 9-2 conference record, including wins in each of its last eight conference games in which they have outscored opponents 69-14.
· The Chanticleers lead the Big South in home runs (59), runs scored (226) and runs batted in (205), while also ranking second in batting (.299 avg.). Their 1.55 home runs per game is good for 11th-best in the NCAA.
· Senior third baseman Kory Hayden is one home run from tying the Big South all-time record. She has hit 57 in her career and nine this season, tied for fifth-most in the Big South.
· The team will look to secure its ninth regular-season conference title and will enter the Big South Tournament (May 7-10) in search of its seventh tournament championship.
· Two conference home series remain with Radford coming to Conway for three games on April 11-12 (game one at noon to be televised on ESPNU), followed by the Presbyterian Series on April 25-26. South Carolina will also come to town on Tuesday, April 14.
Men's Tennis
· The Chanticleers are currently 9-5 overall and 4-1 in the Big South, good for a second-place standing in the conference behind Winthrop (12-6, 5-1).
· Now playing in the newly-constructed, $2 million Coastal Carolina Tennis Complex, the team is off to a 4-0 start at home with wins over USC Upstate, Francis Marion, Wofford and Gardner-Webb.
· The team is in search of its fourth regular-season championship and sixth tournament championship.
· They will wrap up regular-season play by hosting Campbell on Friday, April 10, followed by Winthrop on April 12 and Radford on April 14. The Big South Conference Championship is to be held from April 18-21 in Asheville, N.C.
Women's Tennis
· The Chanticleer women, who sit atop the Big South standings with a 13-4 overall record and a perfect 7-0 conference record, are currently riding a 12-match winning streak, matching the streak that started the 2008-09 season.
· Junior Libby Scott has been named the Big South Player of the Week twice, most recently on March 31, while Sara Bondar has been tabbed the Big South Freshman of the Week two times as well.
· The program is in search of third regular-season and conference championships and first since 2011 and 2007, respectively.
· They wrap up play later this week as they host Charleston Southern on Wednesday April 8 and travel to Presbyterian on Saturday, April 11.
Men's Track & Field
· Through five meets this season, the Chanticleer men currently rank seventh in the Southeast Region, it was announced by the USTFCCCA. The region consists of all Division I programs that sponsor track & field in South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Kentucky.
· They stand behind the likes of Kentucky, South Carolina, Virginia, Clemson, Liberty and Louisville and ahead of NC State, North Carolina and UNC-Wilmington, among others.
· Coastal Carolina currently holds the top Big South spot in seven events, including the 200m (Alexander Hass, 20.99), 400m (DeAndra Lipscomb, 47.34), 110m hurdles (Desmond Wallace, 14.08), 3,000m steeplechase (Joseph Keitt, 9:04.99), 4x100m relay (40.54), 4x400m relay (3:13.73) and high jump (Reggie Nelson, 2.15m).
· Additionally, the 4x200m relay team of Lipscomb, Deion Wellington, Kahlim Denmark and Therius Styles set a new school record with a time 1:24.36 at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational.Â
Women's Track & Field
· The defending Big South champion Chanticleer women were tabbed by the league's coaches as the favorite to repeat as conference champions and currently rank 12th in the women's Southeast Region.
· The 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams combined to tie with Clemson for the Mayor's Relay Cup at the Alan Connie Shamrock Classic.
· Like the men, the Coastal Carolina women currently hold the top Big South spot in seven events, including the 400m (Camille Hurley, 55.82), 1,500m (Aynslee van Graan, 4:26.58), 5,000m (Kyla van Graan, 17:10.95), 10,000m (Letitia Saayman, 34:33.85 -- school record), 400m hurdles (Jessica Gelibert, 59.41), 4x400m relay (3:39.90) and triple jump (Amirah Al-Bayyinah, 12.76m).
· The women are in search of their ninth outdoor Big South Championship (May 14-16 in High Point, N.C.) since 2004.
