Coastal Suffers Hard-Fought Loss to Liberty in Semifinals

May 1, 2015

Final Stats

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team suffered a hard-fought 14-8 loss to the Liberty Flames in the semifinals of the Big South Lacrosse Championship in Rock Hill, S.C. on Friday evening.

With the loss, Coastal Carolina (11-6, 5-2) is eliminated from the tournament while Liberty (9-10, 5-2) advances to the championship game to play host Winthrop (16-3, 6-1) for a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Winthrop defeated High Point by a score of 11-10 prior to the game between Coastal Carolina and Liberty.

The final score was deceiving as the matchup remained neck-and-neck for the majority of the game. After trailing 6-4 at halftime, Coastal Carolina tied the game 7-7 with 21:12 remaining. However, Liberty pulled away from there as theFlamesoutscored the Chanticleers 7-1 down the stretch.

For Coastal Carolina, senior attack Jen Cosgrove and junior attack Keri White led the way with a pair of hat tricks. Cosgrove ended the season with a single-season program record 47 goals while White netted a career-high 39 goals, ranking first and second, respectively, on the team.

On the other end, Liberty was paced by Kallie Britton's six goals and two assists. Seven other Flames got on the scoreboard, with Sam Struss recording two goals.

Coastal Carolina is now 1-3 all-time vs. Liberty, including two losses this season after also falling to the Flames by a final score of 18-8 earlier this year.

The Chanticleers turned in their best season in the program's three-year history as they netted team highs in goals (211), assists (72), points (283) and saves (141). Additionally, the team's 11 wins this season more than doubles the win totals from each of the last two seasons.

Friday's game marked the first ever semifinal appearance for the Chanticleers. Cosgrove and fellow senior Lily Yednockwill bethe lone departures from this year's team, which will look to return to the top half of the Big South standings and make another run in the tournament next season.
