July 28, 2015 CONWAY - The City of Conway -- the home of Coastal Carolina University soccer -- has been ranked as the third "Best Cities for Soccer Fans" by WalletHub.com based on a formula that analyzed a total of 18 key metrics, ranging from the average ticket price for a game to stadium accessibility to the number of championship wins.
Conway ranked third on the list behind Salt Lake City, Utah, which is home to Major League Soccer's Real Salt Lake, and Mansfield, Conn., which is home to the UConn Huskies. Conway ranked ahead of Clemson, S.C., and College Park, Md., -- the home of the University of Maryland -- which checked in at No. 4 and No. 5 on the list, respectively.
Several factors that weighed heavily in Conway's and the Chanticleer's favor included championship wins, cost of attendance and stadium capacity. The men's and women's Chanticleer soccer programs have combined to claim 28 Big South championships with the men winning 24 (12 regular season & 12 tournament) and the women boasting four regular season league title trophies. Along with the championships won by the Chants, the fact that all men's and women's regular season matches played at the CCU Soccer Stadium are FREE to the public showed favorably for Conway and the Chants. Also receiving high praise from the website was stadium accessibility, which factored in stadium size compared to the city's population. The CCU Soccer Stadium currently boasts a capacity of 2,500, while the City of Conway's population registers at 17,103, giving the stadium a 1:6 capacity to population ratio.
In addition to its third overall ranking on the "Best Cities for Soccer Fans" list, Conway was ranked first in the "Best Performing College Soccer Teams" and the "Lowest Minimum Season Ticket Price for a College Soccer Game" categories.
The Chanticleer women play the first match of the 2015 season at the CCU Soccer Stadium on Friday, Aug. 14 as they host East Tennessee State in an exhibition match. The Coastal men play their first match at home, which is also an exhibition, against North Carolina on Saturday, Aug. 22.
The women's first regular season match at home will be Aug. 28 against Georgia Southern, while the men play their first regular season home contest on Sept. 4 against regional rival Charlotte.
