CONWAY - For the fourth consecutive year the Coastal Carolina women's cross country team claimed the team championship, while the men's team took second place on Friday night at the 11th annual Coastal Carolina Invitational. Chanticleer senior Letitia Saayman set a course record for the second consecutive season, shaving 17 seconds off her time from last season. UNC Wilmington's Alex Boseman won the men's individual race and led the Seahawks to the team tile as well.
Women's 5k | First of Four Teams, 18 Points
For the second consecutive year, Coastal Carolina's triumvirate of Letitia Saayman. Kyla van Graan and Aynslee van Graan took the top three spots to lead the Chanticleers to the team title. Saayman's time of 17:00 was enough to eclipse her own course record of 17:17, set last year. (Her time of 17:17 last season was 11 seconds better the previous course mark of 17:28 set by former Coastal runner Julia Viellehner during the 2006 CCU Invitational.)
Kyla van Graan, who won the event in 2013m finished second for the second straight season with a time of 18:01, 15 seconds better than her second-place time from 2014. Placing third overall for the Chants was Kyla's sister, Aynslee van Graan, who completed the 5k course in 18:25, matching her third-place time from last season.
Sophomore Rachel Byrd finished fifth overall with a time of 19:08. Last season, Byrd's finished eighth with a time of 19:57. Rounding out CCU's scoring was Alesia Muklebust, who placed 10th overall with a time of 20:11. UNC Wilmington finished in second place with 42 points. They were paced by junior Sarah Goodnight with a time of 20:04 overall. Charleston Southern was third (80 points) and South Carolina State was fourth (103).
The Division II results were Concord (34), USC Beaufort (60), Guilford (82), Charleston, W.Va. (85) and Francis Marion (103).
Men's 5k | Second of Five Teams, 47 Points
Coastal Carolina's men had three runners finish among the top 20, but UNC Wilmington had three in the top nine to claim the men's title. The Seahawks scored 23 points to Coastal's 47, followed by Longwood (59), Charleston Southern (109) and South Carolina State (125).
Freshman Josh Small led the Chanticleers for the second consecutive week. After placing third in his first collegiate race at the Gamecock Invitational, Small was fourth Friday with a time of 16:22, nearly 40 second better than his time in the opener.
Fellow freshman Riaz Taylor was the second Chant to cross the finish line, placing 16th with a time of 16:47. Teammate and senior Zach Hensel was 17th with a time of 16:52. Elijah Shaw (17:15) and Charles Bascom (18:03) completed the scoring for CCU.
The Division II men's results were Charleston, W.Va. (32), Concord (36), USC Beaufort (89), Francis Marion (96) and Guilford (115).
The Chanticleer cross country teams will return to action on September 26, when they travel to Panorama Farms Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. , also the site of the NCAA Southeast Regional on Nov. 13. The meet is scheduled to start at 10 am.
