CONWAY - Freshman Jair Espinoza recorded his first career multi-goal game in leading No. 7/9 Coastal Carolina to a 2-0 victory over visiting William & Mary Saturday evening at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
The victory moved Coastal's record to 4-0-1 with each win coming by a 2-nil score line, while the Tribe fell to 1-2-1 with the defeat.
The opening 45 minutes of play was centered in the midfield as neither team could connect a final pass for a fully developed attacking threat. The Chants were able to find that elusive final pass in the 45th minute and Jair Espinoza appeared to score the match's first goal, but the Guatemalan was whistled offside in the box. The sides entered the half scoreless with William & Mary holding a 5-1 advantage in shots.
After maintaining control of possession to open the second half, Espinoza broke the scoreless tie with his 57th-minute goal. Sergio Camargo stated the scoring play with a ball from the left side of the 18-yard box to Arnar Geirsson near the top of the box. Geirsson one-touched a pass to Espinoza who dribbled by his immediate defender and slotted his shot into the right side of the net. The goal was Espinoza's first as a collegian and Coastal's eighth of the season.
Coastal applied continued its offensive pressure over the final 10 minutes, resulting in numerous shots on goal. Espinoza made the most of his final shot of the match, scoring his second of the game. Camargo again ignited the score as he beat his defender to the right side of the box and slid an easy cross in front of the goal for Espinoza's shot on a nearly empty net.
The Chants ended the game with a 14-10 margin in shots, including a 6-3 edge in shot on goal. Coastal also out-cornered the Tribe 8-3.
