The Coastal Carolina men's and women's cross country teams each competed in University of Virginia's annual Panorama Farms Invitational on Saturday morning. In a meet that featured multiple ranked teams between the two genders, the Chanticleer women placed 7th in the women's 5k while the men finished unranked outside of the top 15 teams.
Women's 5k | Seventh of Nineteen Teams, 195 Points
Coastal Carolina's women finished seventh overall in the women's 5k race defeating higher ranked teams within the Southeast region. Those teams included Eastern Kentucky (#5), Furman (#6) and Wake Forest (#9). The women's team also finished ahead of conference rivals Liberty, High Point and Radford.
Senior Letitia Saayman paced the Chants for the third time this season, putting together a strong race finishing 3rd of 123 runners in the women's 5k. Saayman finished the race with a time of 17:02.
Kyla van Graan was the second Chant to cross the finish line, placing 18th with a time of 17:44.
Following Kyla van Graan, teammates Aynslee van Graan (18:21) who finished in 41st place and Rachel Byrd (19:00) finishing in 66th place, helped secure Coastal's seventh place finish. Alesia Mucklebust (19:28), Regina Peattie (20:43) and Taylor Creagh (21:06) completed the scoring for CCU.
Host UVA finished in first place with 30 points. UVA had six runners finish in the top 20. Mississippi State finished in second place with 83 points. Auburn was third (106 points), Yale was fourth (134 points) and Oklahoma was fifth (180 points). Eastern Michigan finished just ahead of Coastal in sixth place with 184 points.
Men's 8k | 565 Points
Coastal Carolina's men finished with 565 points but was not enough to place in the top 15 teams of the men's 8k. The men also competed against conference rivals Liberty, High Point, Campbell and Radford.
Freshman Josh Small led the Chanticleers for the third consecutive week. Small finished with a time of 26:32 placing 95th. Fellow freshman Riaz Taylor was the second Chant to cross the finish line, placing 111th with a time of 27:30. Teammate and senior Zach Hensel was 115th with a time of 28:26 and finishing it out for the Chants was Jarrett Ashby (29:33) and Charles Bascom (30:56).
Host UVA also took home first place for the men's 8k finishing with 41 points.
The Chanticleer cross country teams will return to action on October 3 when they travel to the Upstate Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C. The meet is schedule to start at 9 a.m.
