COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina beach volleyball team started the 2016 spring season with a pair of losses Saturday in the first day of competition at the Gamecock Challenge, hosted by the University of South Carolina. The Chanticleers fell to UAB (2-2) and Tulane (5-1) by identical 5-0 scores.
Coastal vs. UAB (L, 0-5)
All but one of the five matches was decided in two sets.
Coastal's No. 2 pairing of Tahleia Bishop and Aleksandra Djuric (0-1) took Michaela Reesor and Avery Hoven to three sets, tying the match with a 21-16 second set after falling 21-18 in the first. The UAB pair, however, hung on to win 15-10 in the third.
Natasa Savovic and Alise Petersone (0-1) fell to Sara Rishell and Chelsi Carter at No. 1; Leah Hardeman and Carla Cahill (0-1) were bested by Tressa Buckland and Avei Legoleo at No. 3; UAB's Gabbie Moreno and Emily Matinez downed Annayka Legros and Shelby Ladewig (0-1) at No. 4; and the No. 5 match resulted in a straight-sets win for Amber Treece and Rachel Evans over Sara Boothe and Mika Mierzwa (0-1).
Coastal vs. Tulane (L, 0-5)
Tulane's five pairs won each match in straight sets as the Chanticleer pairings remained the same as they were in their opening match.
Savovic/Petersone (0-2) dropped a 21-14, 21-14 match at No. 1; Bishop/Djuric (0-2) fell to Anna Chin and Hannah Holmes at No. 2; Hardeman/Cahill were bested 21-12, 21-9 on the third court; Legros/Ladewig (0-2) fell in straight sets by consecutive 21-12 margins at No. 4; and Boothe/Mierzwa (0-2) were defeated 21-17, 21-14 by Miah Diirell and Sarah Strasner.
Coastal closes play at the Gamecock Challenge on Sunday as the Chants face Mercer (1 p.m.) and South Carolina (5 p.m.) in a pair of matches.
