COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina beach volleyball team suffered a second day of back-to-back losses as the Chanticleers (0-4) fell 4-1 to Mercer (4-3) and 5-0 to South Carolina (6-3) on Sunday, the final day of the Gamecock Invitational.
Coastal vs. Mercer (L, 1-4)
Mercer's No. 4 pairing struck first, edging Sara Boothe and Mika Mierzwa in straight sets, 21-11, 21-14. The fifth court then saw Madison Kerr and Morgan MacGilvary down Shelby Ladewig and Iva Mandic before Gretja Otten and Jessica Johnson clinched the match for Mercer on the third court over Annayka Legros and Carla Cahill. Both the No. 5 and No. 3 matches ended in straight sets.
Tori Penrod and Emily Krogman provided Mercer's final point with a straight-sets win over Tahleia Bishop and Aleksandra Djuric on No. 2.
Natasa Savovic and Alise Petersone became the first Chanticleer pair to record a point this season, downing Mercer's top pairing of Emma Peel and Sophie Peel in three sets to close the match.
Coastal vs. South Carolina (L, 0-5)
The Gamecocks' first four points came in straight sets, beginning with the No. 4 match where Jade Vitt and Delaney Wood topped Boothe and Mierzwa.
Lista Darby and Darian Dozier topped Ladewig and Mandic at No. 5, and the match-winning point came at No. 3 where Legros and Cahill fell to Macie Tendrich and Katie Reilly.
Sarah Blomgren and Aubrey Ezell tallied the final straight-sets win over Bishop and Djuric at No. 2, and the No. 1 match resulted in a three-set win for Julia Mannistro and Shannon Williams over Savovic and Petersone.
Coastal will next be in action at the College of Charleston Tournament, held March 24-25 in Charleston, S.C. The Chants are slated to face Jacksonville State on Thursday, and College of Charleston on Friday.
