Final Stats

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team (10-2, 2-0) passed its second Big South test of the season, downing UNC Asheville (5-4, 1-1) 6-1 in a close match Sunday afternoon at the Coastal Carolina tennis complex.

The match was closer than the final margin made it appear, as the doubles point was decided 7-5 on the final court, and three singles matches were stretched to three sets.

"Asheville always plays us tough," said Chanticleer head coach Chris Powers after the win. "We had to bring some tough tennis to get the win today. We are going to continue to build this team on and off the court, and hopefully it will allow us to reach our goal of a championship this spring."

Coastal's third doubles pairing of Rick Timmerman and Luiz Faria ensured a 1-0 lead for the Chants as the two clinched the tightly-contested doubles point.

Pedro Leme and Vuk Velickovic had struck first on the top court with a 6-1 win, and Henry Patten and Josh Swindler had evened the point with a 6-4 victory at No. 2.

Jabor Al-Mutawa (No. 1), Leme (No. 3) and Nic Planchard (No. 5) each won in straight sets in singles, defeating Alex Croker, Thomas Panoulas and Reid Dillon, respectively.

Velickovic rallied from a loss in the first set to down Patten in three at No. 2, and Timmerman accomplished the same feat over Brett Landau at No. 6.

Swindler won Asheville's lone point in three sets over Sebastian Schneider at No. 4.

Coastal's next match will take place on Wednesday when the Chants host Monmouth for a 1 p.m. contest at the Coastal Carolina Tennis Complex.
