ROCKHILL, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina softball team dropped a 5-3 decision at Winthrop Friday evening in the first game of the three-game series.
With the loss the Chanticleers fall to 22-19 overall and 5-5 in the conference. The Eagles are now 13-28, 3-9.
The two teams combined for six hits total, each team with three. Bri Chiusano led the way for the Chanticleers going 2-for-2 at the plate with one run scored.
The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With bases loaded for Winthrop, Blake Wallert reached on an error to plate Leah Young. Then a double from Keleigh Romine drove in two more runs for a 3-0 lead. Winthrop's Brooke Ellison capped off the scoring with an RBI single for a 4-0 advantage.
The teams traded zeroes until the bottom of the fourth when the Eagles added another run. Leah Young had an RBI single up the middle for a 5-0 cushion.
In the top of the fifth, Coastal attempted a comeback bid. Angela Buccilli drew a leadoff walk followed by a Chiusano single. Forbes singled up the middle and, thanks to a Winthrop fielding error, Buccilli advanced to home for CCU's first run. Morgan Noad grounded out but advanced the runners to second and third and Mackenzie Conrad walked to load the bases. Annie Robinson reached on another fielding error in CCU's favor to plate Chiusano and Forbes which proved to be the final score of 5-3
Dominik (14-10) pitched 4.0 innings recording two strikeouts and allowing five runs ââ'¬" only one earned. Ashley Guillette finished the game pitching 2.0 innings tallying two strikeouts.
Coastal will return to action Saturday versus Winthrop to close out the series with a doubleheader. First pitch set for 1 p.m. with game two starting approximately 30 minutes later.
