KIAWAH ISLAND - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team opened its 2016-17 season with 36 holes Monday at The Invitational at The Ocean Course (par 72, 7,115 yards). The Chanticleers posted an opening round 1-under par 287 and followed with an even par 288 in the afternoon for a score of 575 to stand in ninth place in the 16-team field.
Middle Tennessee State leads the field with a 20-under 556, followed by Georgia, Ole Miss, Augusta and host College of Charleston.
Coastal was led by Alfredo Ruiz, who is tied for the tournament lead with 13 birdies. The senior shot an opening-round, 2-under 70 and backed that up by tying his career low with a 3-under 69 to move up 11 spots into a tie for fourth after 36 holes. His score of 139 is five shots off the lead and is his best career 36-hole score. Ruiz started his day on hole 3 and made the turn at 2-under with birdies on holes 6 and 9. He got to 3-under with a birdie on the par-5 11th, but lost a stroke with a bogey on the following hole. He later birdied the par-5 16th, but suffered a double bogey on the 17th. Ruiz ended his first round with a birdie on the par-4 second hole for his 70
In the afternoon session, Ruiz reeled off eight birdies, including birdies on holes 12 and 17 which he was a combined 3-over in the first round on the two. Even though he took a triple bogey 8 on the par-5 second hole, his last hole of the day, Ruiz still managed to tie his career low with a 69.
Thadd Obecny II is tied for 30th after posting a 1-under par 143 through two rounds, which is a career best by three strokes. He started his day with a double bogey on the par-4 first hole, but bounced back with birdies on holes 2 and 4. On the inward nine, he had three bogeys in a four-hole span and was at 2-over par through 15 holes. However, he birdied holes 16 and 17 to finish with an even par 72. In the afternoon session, Obecny had four birdies, including one on the final hole, and 13 pars but had a triple bogey on the par 5 16th to settle for his 1-under 71.
Olle Widegren is tied for 58th as the senior carded a 36-hole score of 148 (73-75). On his opening round, Widegren started and finished with bogeys but had three birdies and a double for post a 1-over 73. In the afternoon, he had 15 pars and offset his bogey on the 15th hole with a birdie on the 7th. However, a triple on the ninth hole led to his 3-over 73.
Luis Ruiz, who tied for the tournament lead by scoring 2-under on the par 3's, is tied for 72. The sophomore shot an opening-round, even-par 72 and turned in a 79 in the second round for a 36-hole total of 151. Daniel Overas carded a two-round score of 152 and is tied for 76th. He opened with a 79, having no birdies in the morning, but rallied with four birdies in the afternoon for a 1-over 73.
The Invitational will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday.
